Chapter 14: Calypso’s Island

The galley drifted toward the island under a sky that had softened to a perfect, endless blue, the sea so calm it seemed almost unnatural, as though the waves themselves had been ordered to hush.

Calypso’s island rose from the water like a dream made solid, lush green hills, waterfalls tumbling into hidden pools, flowers in colors too vivid to be real, and the faint, sweet scent of blossoms carried on a warm breeze that felt like an invitation.

The crew gathered at the rails, faces softening despite their exhaustion, eyes brightening at the sight of paradise after weeks of storms, hunger, and blood.

Jax stood at the prow, the pearl-white shell from the Sirens gone to dust, the Bag of Winds empty and useless, but the memory of every trial still sharp in his mind.

The island’s beauty was overwhelming, too perfect, too gentle, and the lore whispered warnings in the back of his head.

Calypso, the nymph who loved Odysseus in the myths, had kept him captive for seven years, offering immortality and endless pleasure in exchange for staying forever.

Eur leaned on his shield beside him, voice low.

“Ogygia. The hidden island. Calypso’s home. The stories say she’s beautiful beyond words, but she binds men with love. Seven years, Captain. We can’t stay.”

Jax nodded, feeling the pull already, a soft tug in his chest, like a memory of home that wasn’t quite his.

“We don’t stay. We resupply. Rest. Then leave. No matter what she offers.”

Thea scanned the shore from the deck.

“No defenses. No guards. Just… peace. It’s almost too quiet.”

  Phil tested his bowstring.

“I’ll keep watch. If it feels wrong, we row.”

  Ment rubbed his hands together.

“Fresh water. Fruit. We need it. But the gods don’t give gifts without strings.”

Pol and Kid looked at Jax, faces hopeful.

“We could use a break,” Pol said.

  Jax felt the tension.

  The crew was tired.

  Wounded.

Hungry for something more than survival.

He pulled up the crew status.

They beached the galley in a sheltered cove, tying it fast.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

The island welcomed them with birdsong and the soft rustle of leaves.

A figure appeared on the path, tall, radiant, hair like midnight, eyes like the sea at dawn.

  Calypso.

  She smiled, voice like music.

“Welcome, Odysseus. And your brave crew. You have come far. Rest here. Heal. The island is yours.”

  The crew stared, entranced.

  Jax stepped forward.

“We thank you. We need water, food, rest. Then we leave.”

  Calypso’s smile widened.

“Of course. Come. My home is open to you.”

They followed her up the path, the island unfolding in beauty, pools of crystal water, fruit heavy on branches, soft grass underfoot.

Calypso led them to a palace of marble and gold, rooms open to the sky, beds of silk, tables laden with food and wine.

  The crew ate.

  Drank.

  Laughed.

  Jax watched.

  The pull was stronger now.

He felt it in his bones, peace, love, immortality.

Calypso approached him alone that night, robes flowing like water.

“You could stay, Jax. Be my husband. Never age. Never fight. Never lose another soul.”

Jax felt the words wrap around him like silk.

  But he thought of Penelope.

  Of Ithaca.

  Of his crew.

  “I can’t,” he said.

  “I have a home.”

  Calypso’s eyes darkened.

“Then you will leave. But the island will remember.”

The crew rested, wounds healing, strength returning, but the island’s pull grew stronger with every hour.

Kid and Pol spent days in the pools, laughing.

Ment cooked feasts from the island’s bounty.

Thea and Phil explored, returning with stories of beauty.

But Jax felt the trap closing.

On the fifth day, Calypso summoned him to her chamber.

“You are strong. But your crew is weak. They want to stay. Let them. You can go alone.”

  Jax shook his head.

  “We leave together. Tomorrow.”

  Calypso smiled.

  “Then you will leave alone.”

She sang, a soft melody, not the Sirens’ lure, but something deeper.

It wrapped around the crew like smoke.

  Kid stood first.

  “I… I want to stay.”

  Pol nodded.

  “Me too.”

  Ment hesitated.

  “It’s peaceful here.”

Eur looked at Jax, eyes conflicted.

“Captain… maybe we could rest longer.”

  Jax felt the panic rise.

  The song was binding them.

  He activated [Voice of Resistance].

  He shouted.

“We are not staying! We have a home! Ithaca! Penelope! Our families!”

  The song faltered.

  Calypso’s eyes flashed.

  “You defy me?”

  She raised her hands.

The island responded, vines lashed out, trees bent, water rose in waves.

  The battle began.

  Jax drew his dagger.

  “Form up! Protect each other!”

  Vines whipped.

  Eur blocked with his shield.

Phil loosed arrows into the roots.

  Thea slashed vines.

  Ment swung his pot.

Pol and Kid fought with spears.

  Calypso sang louder.

  The crew wavered again.

  Jax used [Divine Deception].

  The crew blurred.

  Calypso’s song missed.

  Jax charged.

  Dagger met her magic.

  She recoiled.

  The vines retreated.

  The water fell.

  Calypso stepped back.

“You win. Go. But remember, immortality was offered. You refused.”

  She vanished.

  The island stilled.

The crew returned to the galley, shaken but whole.

Wounds healed by the island’s magic, strength restored, but the memory of the temptation lingered.

  Jax looked at them.

“We almost lost ourselves. But we didn’t. We’re going home.”

  Eur clapped his shoulder.

“You’re still Nobody. But you’re our Nobody.”

  Thea smiled.

“Thea works. Thank you for pulling us back.”

  Phil nodded.

  “We’ll follow you anywhere.”

  Ment laughed.

“Even if it means more hunger.”

  Pol and Kid grinned.

  “We’re with you, Captain.”

  A blue box appeared.

  The galley pushed off.

  The island receded.

  The sea opened.

  But the thunder whispered again.

  Closer now.

A new shadow rose on the horizon, Phaeacians’ island.

  The next trial waited.

  Jax gripped the rail.

  “Onward.”

The galley sailed into the dawn.

  - Would YOU have taken Calypso’s offer (immortality & peace forever), or fought to leave like Jax? ??

  - MVP moment: Jax’s “We have a home!” rally cry, Eur’s conflicted shield, or the dagger vs. magic clash? ???

  - Phaeacians next… what kind of welcome (or trial) do you think awaits? ????

The thunder’s closer. Phaeacians rise on the horizon.

  Onward. Home is waiting. ????
