The med-bay smelled of antiseptic and iron. Monitors pulsed with slow, steady rhythms, bathing the room in green light. Hiruzen stirred first, his eyelids heavy, his body wrapped in aches. Beside him, Emma turned in her sleep. Both were jolted awake by a voice that cut through the haze.
“Hey—hope you two didn’t have too much trouble without me.”
Their eyes flew open. For a moment they thought they were dreaming. Then they saw him, leaning awkwardly against the doorway with a tired grin—Jonathan.
“JONATHAN!”
Both shot upright, stumbling over wires and IV stands before crashing into him. Their arms wrapped so tight around his chest that the monitors behind them barked warnings.
“You’re—squeezing—the life—outta me,” Jonathan wheezed, laughing despite himself.
Hiruzen pulled back first, his grin wide, eyes glassy. “Sorry, man. It’s just—damn, it’s good to see you standing again.”
Emma clung a second longer, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I thought… I thought we lost you.”
Jonathan ruffled her hair clumsily, his voice cracking with warmth. “C’mon, Emma. You know it’ll take more than some big boom to keep me down. You forget—I’m built tough. But I hear you two haven’t exactly been slacking while I was out.”
At his words, Hiruzen and Emma froze. Images from the training sim—fire and frost, war and clashing wills—flashed sharp in their minds. They looked at each other, mouths opening but no words coming.
Jonathan frowned. “Okay, what’s with the long faces?”
Hiruzen drew a breath, then stepped forward. “Emma, I—”
Emma cut him off, her voice trembling. “No. Me first.” She turned to Jonathan, then back to Hiruzen. “I hate war, Hiruzen. Always have. I just wanted it to end—the blood, the killing, all of it. And when I saw you on their side, I thought… I thought you’d become like them. Like the savages I swore to fight.” Her voice cracked. “I never wanted to raise my spear against you.”
Hiruzen shook his head, fists clenching at his sides. “And I thought you’d never understand why I chose to fight. Derrick isn’t a savage, Emma. He lost his family to Zeus, the same way I lost mine. When I heard his story, I saw myself in him. I couldn’t let him fight that war alone. Not when we carry the same pain.”
Emma’s lip trembled. She stepped closer. “I… I’m sorry. For not trying to understand you.”
Hiruzen gave a faint, broken smile. “And I’m sorry for not trusting you enough to explain.”
They embraced again, both of them trembling. Tears streaked their faces, but the weight between them finally lifted.
Jonathan leaned against the bed rail with a sigh. “Sheesh. You two go through hell for a couple weeks and come back sounding like war veterans. Next you’ll start writing poetry about scars.”
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Hiruzen wiped his face quickly, trying to mask the tears. “Yeah… but at least we came out stronger.”
The door hissed open. Reito strode in, pushing a sleek machine on a hover-cart. Its core pulsed with faint blue light, a halo of rotating rings orbiting the device.
Reito’s usual calm voice carried a spark of pride. “Stronger indeed. You’re not the same kids who entered that simulation.”
Emma blinked. “Reito, sir—where were you?”
“I was speaking with Mrs. Zinc about Jonathan’s recovery.” He patted the device’s shell. “And I fetched this: the Ascendant Gauge. It will measure the changes in your bodies and quantify just how far you’ve come.”
Jonathan whistled. “Looks like a cross between a telescope and a toaster.”
Reito ignored him and gestured. “Step forward, Emma. You first.”
Emma hesitated, then nodded. A panel unfolded, projecting a shimmering lattice of blue light that washed over her. Glyphs spun across the machine’s surface. After a long hum, a voice announced the results:
Ascendant Gauge Report — Subject: Emma Lucero
Strength: +46%
Speed: +102%
Durability: +60%
Power: +125%
Overall Growth: +83%
Emma’s eyes widened. “I… I knew I’d improved, but not that much.”
Jonathan gave her a playful shove. “Figures. While I was napping, you turned into a rocket.”
Emma flushed, pride flickering behind her tears.
“Your turn, Hiruzen,” Reito said.
Hiruzen stepped forward, his chest tight. As the lattice scanned him, the air grew colder. The machine paused, processing longer than before, before speaking:
Ascendant Gauge Report — Subject: Hiruzen Yuki
Strength: +89%
Speed: +80%
Durability: +107%
Power: +172%
Overall Growth: +112%
The room fell silent.
Hiruzen stood frozen, heart pounding in his ears. “Reito… is this real?”
Reito placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “Every number. You’ve surpassed your old self a hundred times over. Be proud. You’ve grown into someone strong enough to change fate.”
Hiruzen’s throat tightened. For the first time in years, tears came freely—not from sorrow, but from relief. “I… I finally did it.”
Emma stepped beside him, her smile soft. Jonathan thumped his back with a grin.
Hiruzen wiped his face, exhaling hard. “Midterms are only a week away. I’m not holding anything back this time. How about you two?”
Emma nodded. “Me neither. No regrets.”
Jonathan cracked his knuckles. “Those other students better brace themselves. I’m starving for action—they won’t know what hit ’em.”
The three of them stood together, not just as teammates, but as survivors, forged stronger by the fire of their trials.
Hiruzen clenched his fists, his eyes burning with determination. “Then let’s get ready. Whatever’s waiting for us—we’ll face it together.”
