Recovery/Preparation Part 2

The crisp air of the North Sector felt different compared to the heavy, sterile atmosphere of the medical wing. Hiruzen walked with his hands stuffed into his pockets, the faint sting of newly healed nerves in his arms reminding him of Iskarth’s cryptic words. A vessel… huh? The thought clung to him like frost on glass.

Just as the training center’s dome came into view, a familiar voice called out:

Kai: “Yo, Ice Head! Still walking upright, huh? Thought you’d be flat on your back for another month.”

Hiruzen turned, a grin breaking across his face.

Hiruzen: “Kai? Man, it’s been a while! You haven’t changed a bit.”

Kai leaned casually against a lamppost, arms crossed, a small flame dancing at his fingertips like a toy.

Kai: “Heard about what went down in the South Sector. From the rumors, you should be half-dead. Guess those doctors really worked a miracle.”

Hiruzen: [scratching his head] “Yeah, something like that… Anyway, I thought you’d be training. Mid-terms are around the corner, right?”

Kai: “Training? Pfft. I came to see if my old rival’s still worth a damn. Mid-terms aren’t about books or lectures—they’re about fighting. About showing just how far you’ve come since the placement trials. So… how about it? You and me. Right now.”

  Hiruzen chuckled.

Hiruzen: “You’re really itching for a fight, huh? Fine, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’m not the same guy you fought weeks ago.”

Kai: [smirking, his flames intensifying] “Good. I was hoping you’d say that.”

The two made their way to the East Sector’s battle arena, an open expanse of stone tiles and reinforced walls. As the doors sealed shut, Kai rolled his shoulders, fire crackling across his skin like living armor.

Kai: “Alright, Ice Head—let’s see what you’ve got.”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Before Hiruzen could reply, Kai vanished in a blur of speed, his body igniting like a human comet. Hiruzen’s eyes widened, but his instincts flared; ice shot up in an instant, forming a thick wall. Kai’s flaming fist crashed into it with a thunderous crack, steam erupting as fire met frost.

Hiruzen: “You’re still holding back, aren’t you?”

Kai: [grinning through the steam] “Maybe a little.”

Hiruzen lunged, his hand glowing with crystalline frost. He grabbed Kai’s arm mid-swing, freezing it solid. The sound of crackling ice echoed, but Kai gritted his teeth and forced his flames to erupt, thawing himself free before slamming a fiery gut punch into Hiruzen.

The blow landed, but Hiruzen had expected it. His arms shifted, claws of jagged ice forming over his hands. He clamped down on Kai’s shoulder and swung him hard into the arena floor, the stone shattering on impact.

Kai: “Tch—guess you have been busy.”

Hiruzen leapt back, thrusting both arms forward. A tidal wave of ice surged outward, covering half the arena in jagged frozen spires.

  Kai whistled.

Kai: “You’re really going all out, huh? Fine then.”

His body flared with a white-hot blaze. He gathered his fire into a massive sphere, the heat so intense it warped the air around it. With a roar, he hurled it straight into the glacier. Fire and ice collided in a violent explosion, filling the entire arena with a dense wall of steam.

  The world vanished into white.

Through the haze, two silhouettes lunged—Kai with his fist blazing like a miniature sun, Hiruzen with frost swirling into claws. Their fists clashed once, twice, three times, each impact cracking the floor beneath them. Steam hissed and roared around them like a storm.

They finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, both grinning.

Kai: “Alright, Ice Head… let’s finish this. One last shot.”

Hiruzen: [raising his arms, frost spiraling violently] “Yeah… I was just about to say the same thing.”

  Kai: “Flashfire—HELL BURN!”

  Hiruzen: “Demon Frost—GLACIAL ERUPTION!”

Firestorm and glacier met in a cataclysmic explosion, a shockwave ripping across the arena and sending both fighters tumbling back. The walls groaned under the force, alarms briefly flashing red before stabilizers engaged.

Hiruzen coughed, forcing himself up on one knee.

  Hiruzen: “Hey, Kai… you good?”

Kai: [wiping blood from his lip, still smiling] “Yeah. But I could be better.”

They both laughed, the tension dissolving into genuine camaraderie.

The doors burst open, and Emma stormed in, her face red with frustration.

Emma: “WHAT the hell are you two doing!? The arena sensors spiked like a demon attack!”

Hiruzen scratched the back of his head sheepishly.

Hiruzen: “Heh… I was just showing Kai how much I’ve grown.”

Emma: “By nearly blowing up the East Sector!?”

  Kai laughed, waving dismissively.

Kai: “Relax, Emma. Just a friendly spar. But damn, Hiruzen—looks like you’ve been hiding some new tricks. You’d better hope we don’t face off in the mid-terms, or I’m burning right through you.”

Hiruzen: [grinning back] “Don’t worry. By then, I’ll be ready for anything you throw at me.”

  Emma grabbed Hiruzen’s wrist.

Emma: “Well, you won’t be ready unless we go. Reito’s waiting—he’s got some new training sim lined up for us.”

  Hiruzen: “What kind of sim?”

Emma: [grimacing] “Don’t know. But he said once we go in, we won’t be coming out until one week before mid-terms start.”

  Kai raised an eyebrow.

Kai: “Sounds brutal. Good luck, Ice Head. Try not to freeze solid in there.”

Hiruzen: “You too, Kai. And don’t think I’ll go easy on you when we meet again.”

Emma tugged Hiruzen toward the exit, muttering under her breath.

Emma: “Honestly… you two are gonna drive me insane.”

Hiruzen glanced back at Kai one last time, a fire of determination burning in his eyes.

The mid-terms are coming. And this time, I won’t let anyone down.
