January 13th, 1919

It had been an alright day that has only gotten worse as night approached. I now write this outside of my tent in the light of our fire. We were able to go outside today, however a bit too optimistically. We all stretched our legs and moved around, which we didn't have the pleasure of doing for the past two days prior to this. The cold hit us like a sledgehammer cracking ice. I could feel my eyeballs freeze over. It was quite unpleasant, and I can't say that I am used to it all too much now. Angelo came over and hugged me a few minutes after the hunters, suppliers, and scouters left.

"What are you doing?" I couldn't help but ask.

  He shivered harshly, "Cold."

"I can tell. Warm up, Angelo," I told him, starting a small fire to warm us up. I certainly don't want him to get frostbite. He is just a boy. It would be awful to lose a finger due to something that could be avoided for the rest of his life. He's the one who will have the longest out of all of us. I'm sure of that.

A few hours later, everyone came back with all the supplies and we all ate. Before I even took a bite, I looked around at all the boys. I knew something was wrong.

"Where's William the Aussie?" I questioned all of the boys.

Igor looked up with a worried look and said something in Russian to Yuri quietly, him translating, "He said he was going to look at something and he'd come back to camp when he got done."

We all began the search for William the Aussie, but our efforts were futile. We could not find him. Igor showed us where he had last seen him, and we kept looking. We are not going to leave without knowing where our boys are. However, night approached and the feeling of hopelessness set in. We couldn't find him, and there is no surviving overnight in the cold of this winter. I wait for him outside the tent, but I know all hope is lost. I suppose that William the American will just be "William" now.
