Like most things, the process for getting a stat sheet in the guild is straightforward and efficient; it didn't take us long to know about Laself's newest sub class. The guild receptionist asked her questions while I read the effects of the class.
"You've never had something like that before?"
"No, not really. I've only gotten the sub class recently, after I started selling food during the early days of the festival."
"Hm, is that so? Not that strange for someone to suddenly get a class during times like that..."
"Is that bad?"
"No, of course not." The receptionist quickly denied. "And if you are worried whether or not your class is going to get you in trouble then it won't, in fact I'd argue that the guild will keep their eyes on you because of it."
Well the receptionist isn't wrong, even I'm curious about Laself's potential. [Nourisher] has given her dexterity and resistance, which means the class is actually one of the rarer ones people can get, its effects also center around caring people, not just through food but other stuff as well.
Comparatively speaking, I'd say that the class is better than [Caretaker] because it isn't just limited to helping people physically but also involves food. [Caretaker] does have the advantage of being able to clean houses well but that's a non factor since everyone can clean their house, you don't need a class for it.
"She's right, Laself." The stat sheet left my hand and I stood up. "Your class is fairly good, and I think we can actually use it to advertise the stall, customers might even prefer our food in the long run."
"You're that girl right?" Now that I started to talk, the receptionist gave me all her attention, she giggled. "The one that Opier serviced a few days ago? She says you're a bit ambitious and that you've gotten a big head thanks to the minor achievements you've gotten."
Minor achievements? My "achievements" are anything but "minor", they're all beyond what someone my age should actually be capable of!
... Which doesn't really mean anything since I'm not actually a kid mentally. "She mentioned me? Guess I'm fairly memorable aren't I?" My grin was as playful as my reply. "I only came here to get my learner's badge, hopefully I'll finish my current quest soon."
"You mean the bees wax one? That's a fairly impossible thing to do." The receptionist shrugged. "You know that there's little to no hives inside the rainforest right? It's better if you pick something else."
So that's why Opier didn't bother to care about my choice back then... I just thought she didn't realize that bees are dangerous, who would have thought that she knew the quest is impossible to get done?
"It's okay, I'm confident I'll be able to find a beehive soon." It's not like my search for the mender's cottage is going to change so why not just continue doing both of them? "Thank you for your concern, however, I appreciate it."
"Of course, I'm happy to help." Nodded the older girl.
"We'll take our leave now." I grabbed Laself's hand and stood up, "come on Laself."
My sister in law gave the receptionist one last look before facing forward. "They're a lot nicer than I expected," she starts, tone even. "I thought that the guild needed tougher women to deal with all the muscular adventurers?"
"What? No." I raised an eyebrow, hasn't she been interacting with adventurers all this time? She should have figured out by now that they're just regular people, not muscle headed jocks. "You sell food to adventurers don't you Laself? Did they seem like bad people to you?"
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
She paused for a moment, considering my question. Laself shook her head, "no, not as far as I'm aware. All of them were pretty respectful and the only times they weren't was when that trio harassed me about the lack of food and when you sold all those scrolls."
Okay, the trio harassing her is normal behavior— and they also turned into an aberrant so they got punished I guess? No one deserves to turn into one of those things though. — and the adventurers trying to intimidate me so that I sell my scrolls for cheap are the same, they simply wanted to get more than what they paid for.
Not that I'm gonna tolerate cheap bastards like that, but it's best to understand them... Most of the time.
"Right? See? Only some of them are actually bad people, others are just there to do their job, it's dangerous, sure, but it's a job regardless." Mentioning that they're keeping everyone safe is simply pointless because that's just common sense.
"Adventuring is just another job then?"
"Yep." I nod. "And like most jobs, it's pretty varied, killing monsters is the most common interpretation since that's what pays the most but you've heard me talk to that receptionist about my current quest right?"
"Yes, the one about finding bees?"
"That." My confirmation weirdly made Laself relax, her tense shoulders easing up. "Fetch quests pay less but they do exist, and then there's also quests that ask people to scout forest or potential monster dens too."
Honestly though, adventuring is still dangerous. Even fetch quests can easily lead someone deep into the forest or worse, a cave.
"You're right, adventuring is just another job isn't it?" Laself grinned. "I thought it's always so dangerous,"
"It's not." Well the quests that pay cheaply aren't.
"Still, don't you think that selling scrolls is better?"
This again? I shake my head, "no. I want to become an adventurer Laself, I'm not gonna change my mind, it's not about profits or safety."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to... Say that."
"It's fine, I understand that you don't want me to put myself in danger but I'm fine." Doesn't change the fact that their concern is annoying though. "Let's just get to the tavern okay?"
"Okay."
My profits for today went up to over a thousand gold, 1,260 to be exact. I had around 63 scrolls and sold all of them in less than an hour, it's pretty fascinating seeing a bunch of people enter the tavern just to buy my scrolls honestly. I wonder how Monemon feels about it?
Who cares? I don't. The guy is probably just glad that he's getting traction in the morning nowadays.
Speaking of him... I'm gonna be telling him that we won't be setting up another stall tomorrow. After the day ended, I came up to the counter and waited for him to serve two patrons. Once he went over to me I decided to tell him bluntly about my decision.
"Thanks for letting us stay here for a bit, we're going to be leaving soon." I watched his reaction but he didn't seem all that surprised, he only nodded. "You're not mad?"
"Kid, I couldn't care less if you stay for another week or if you leave tomorrow." Monemon just shrugged. "This tavern's always run well, I doubt your presence changed anything."
"Right." Huh, I assumed from our first conversation that he's the kind of guy who put a lot of emphasis on his business but I guess I was wrong? "Thanks for letting us stay anyway, I would have stayed in that alleyway for as long as I needed but I thought that the others needed to see the kind of growth they can achieve through this."
"Growth? I doubt that they even think that way." Monemon eyed me, he scoffed. "The way they look at you makes me think they know their success is because of you, not their own efforts."
"I'm more than okay with that, too." My retort got his eyes to widen. "Let them think that they're safe under my wing, they need it anyway. Soon enough they'll feel the pressure of selling food on their own so a bit of reassurance wouldn't hurt."
"Heh, you sound like you know what you're talking about." Monemon crossed his arms. "I've seen merchants with less certainty and maturity than you, what the hell happened for you to have that kind of outlook?"
"Nothing." Once upon a time, I considered telling people about my situation but then I decided against it. No one in this world will ever know that I am a reincarnated person, "people in Flotol have always seen me as weird though, if that answers your question."
"Heh, I guess it does?" He shook his head. "Whatever kid, do what you want." Monemon left me to serve a woman who found a seat 5 stools away from me. Before he went out of earshot, he adds, "you should let them think for themselves too, otherwise they'll start choking on their own spit once you're gone."
He gave me good advice and it's not like I'm unaware that Laself is reliant on me, I don't know what will happen this following winter but I'm sure that Howaph will be able to handle it. That's what I'm hoping for at least, but anything can happen and you can't always control everything.
I got up and walked out. Now to find that empty building I can buy.
