Chapter 90: The Nature of Concepts

As the pressure in the office intensified, Rei struggled to remain standing. Takao's overwhelming aura pressed down on him like an invisible weight, making each breath a conscious effort. Yet despite the strain, Rei held his ground, his transformation continuing to manifest—red eyes glowing, fangs lengthening, claws extending from his fingertips.

Takao observed the changes with keen interest, the triquetra symbol in his eyes pulsing with ancient power. After a moment that seemed to stretch into eternity, he gradually released the pressure, satisfaction evident in his expression.

"Good," Takao said, returning to his seat behind the desk. He gestured for Rei to sit as well. "Your instincts are strong. That's promising."

Rei sat slowly, his body still tingling from the sudden transformation. He looked down at his hands as the claws receded, leaving normal fingernails in their place. "What was that about?" he asked, his voice steady despite his racing heart.

"A test," Takao replied simply. "I needed to see how you respond to threat. The body reveals what the mind conceals."

Rei's eyes had returned to their normal black, but the memory of their red glow lingered in his mind. "You mentioned extraordinary abilities over concepts, but I don't even know what mine is."

Takao nodded, leaning back in his chair. "Before we address your specific case, perhaps I should explain how concepts generally work. It might help you understand what makes yours so unique."

He stood, moving to the window where the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across Osaka. "Every person with the ability to use mana has a concept—a manifestation of their soul's unique signature, if you will. It defines what they can do with their mana, how they shape it, control it."

Takao turned, the light behind him creating a silhouette of his imposing figure. "My concept, for example, is called 'Equality.' Did you notice the triquetra symbol in my eyes?"

Rei nodded, remembering the three interlocking circles that had appeared in Takao's eyes during his display of power.

"The triquetra represents perfect harmony in trio—the three aspects of my ability working in concert," Takao explained. "First, I can copy another person's concept temporarily. Second, I can use that copied concept with almost perfect mana efficiency. And third, my experience allows me to master copied concepts almost instantly, sometimes wielding them even more effectively than their original owners."

He returned to his seat, the movement deliberate and measured. "That's why I've survived so long in this world. After decades of observing and copying countless concepts, there are few abilities I haven't experienced, few techniques I haven't mastered."

Rei leaned forward, fascination overriding his earlier discomfort. "So concepts are like... personal powers?"

"In the simplest terms, yes," Takao agreed. "But there are rules. Most importantly, a person can typically manifest only one concept. Attempting to use multiple concepts simultaneously causes what we call 'overload'—essentially, the mind and body cannot properly channel conflicting mana signatures without a suitable medium to differentiate them."

Takao's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Which brings me to you, Rei Tachibana. When I attempted to copy your concept just now, I couldn't. This is... unusual. Extremely unusual."

Rei's mind flashed back to that training session with Kage and Katie. "Someone tried to duplicate me once before," he said slowly. "Katie—she has a concept called Duplicate. She tried to create a clone of me, but it didn't work. The strands just... fizzled out."

Takao's expression brightened with confirmation. "Exactly! And do you know why that happened?"

  Rei shook his head.

"Based on what I've observed and what Haikito has told me, I believe you have a unique ability to compartmentalize multiple entities within yourself," Takao said, excitement creeping into his voice. "Your eyes appear to act as a medium—a gateway, if you will—allowing different presences to manifest through you without causing overload."

He leaned forward, fingers steepled on the desk. "It's not that you don't have a concept, Rei. It's that your concept itself might be to house entities within you, like..." he searched for an analogy, "...like a biological flash drive, storing different data sets that can be accessed when needed."

Takao paused, his weathered face growing more thoughtful as he continued to piece together his theory. "But the more I consider it, the more I believe your concept runs deeper than simple compartmentalization. Your eyes aren't just acting as a medium—they're responding to something fundamental about your nature."

He stood, moving to the window as he organized his thoughts. "I'm beginning to suspect your concept relates to souls themselves, Rei. The ability to house, interact with, perhaps even manipulate the essence of what makes someone who they are."

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Rei's confusion was evident in his expression. "Souls? I don't understand what that means, Mr. Takao. How can someone have a concept related to souls?"

Within Rei's mind, however, Hikito's reaction was immediate and intense. Behind the blue door, his eyes widened with a mixture of fear and fascination.

A soul concept? Hikito thought to himself, the chains around him seeming to grow heavier as the implications settled in. If that's true, then my brother is far more terrifying than even I realized.

He pressed against the mental barriers, not to escape but to better observe what was happening outside. The ability to manipulate souls directly... that would explain why I can exist as a separate entity within him, why Leonis can manifest, why copying concepts fail against him.

Hikito's thoughts grew darker, more urgent. If Rei learns to truly master a soul concept, he won't just be housing us—he could control us, reshape us, or worse... He could do that to anyone. No wonder Lucifer chose him as the final vessel. But if Rei discovers this power before Lucifer's return...

The thought sent a chill through Hikito's consciousness. I need to accelerate the timeline. Rei cannot learn what he truly is.

Rei's mind raced with the implications. The red eyes, Leonis. The blue eyes, Hikito. Were they manifestations of his concept rather than just voices in his head?

"Haikito mentioned there is another person residing within you," Takao continued, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "To verify my hypothesis, I need to meet him. Can you bring him out?"

Rei tensed, the request sending a jolt of panic through him. "I—I don't think that's a good idea," he stammered. "The last time Hikito took control, he almost killed Josuke. He's dangerous."

"Ah, so his name is Hikito," Takao noted with interest. "A curious similarity to our chairman's name."

Within Rei's mind, he could hear Hikito laughing, the sound echoing through his mental landscape. The blue door was vibrating, chains rattling as Hikito strained against them.

"Let me out, brother," Hikito's voice slithered through his thoughts. "Just for a little while. Don't you want to know what you truly are?"

Takao observed Rei's internal struggle, noting the subtle shifts in his expression. "I understand your hesitation, Rei. But consider this: whether you want to or not, if you're truly the final vessel for Lucifer, what I'm asking is a small task compared to what destiny has laid out for you."

His words hung in the air between them, heavy with implication and inevitability.

Rei closed his eyes, fighting the internal battle. Hikito's laughter grew louder, more insistent. The chains in his mind rattled more violently.

"Come on, Rei," Hikito urged. "You let Leonis have his fun with Ryuu. It's only fair you let me have a turn."

After what seemed like an eternity of internal struggle, Rei exhaled slowly. "Just... for a moment," he whispered, more to himself than to Takao. "And I want him back in the cage at the first sign of trouble."

Before Takao could respond, the atmosphere in the room shifted dramatically. The air grew dense, heavy with a pressure different from Takao's earlier display. This force felt primal, ancient—like the gravity at the center of a black hole.

Rei's eyes snapped open, but they were no longer his own. Instead of their usual black or even Leonis's red, they glowed a piercing, electric blue that seemed to illuminate the room from within.

"Finally," Hikito said through Rei's lips, the voice similar yet fundamentally different—deeper, more resonant, with an undertone of barely contained power. "That cage is so... restrictive."

Takao's triquetra symbol appeared in his eyes again, glowing brightly as he attempted to copy whatever concept was manifesting before him. After a moment, he frowned, shaking his head slightly.

"As I suspected," he said, studying Hikito with clinical interest. "I cannot copy your concept either."

Hikito smirked, stretching Rei's fingers as if testing the limits of his temporary freedom. "Of course you can't. I'm not something that can be... duplicated."

The gravity in the room intensified, small objects on Takao's desk beginning to slide toward Hikito as if pulled by an invisible force.

"How bothersome you are to my goals, old man," Hikito said, his piercing blue eyes fixed on Takao. "Poking and prodding where you don't belong."

Takao maintained his composed demeanor despite the growing pressure. "And what exactly are those goals, if I may ask? What is your purpose within the boy?"

Hikito scoffed, as if the question itself was beneath him. Without warning, he lunged forward, moving with a speed that seemed impossible given the gravitational force filling the room.

Takao barely dodged, sliding to the side as Hikito's fist shattered the wooden desk where he had been sitting moments before.

"His speed..." Takao thought, analyzing the movement with experienced eyes. "No, that's not it. It's something different. As if he's warping gravity to himself."

Inside Rei's mind, Rei was screaming for Hikito to stop, pushing against the blue door that now kept him trapped instead of his counterpart.

"Oh, come on now," Hikito responded, his mental voice mocking. "You let Leonis have some fun. Let me show you what I can do!"

Hikito pressed forward, each step leaving small cracks in the floor as gravity intensified around him. He reached for Takao, his movements precise despite their violence.

But just as he was about to land another strike, something shifted. The piercing blue of his eyes flickered, then dulled, returning to Rei's normal pitch black. Rei grabbed his head, gasping as if surfacing from deep water, the sudden transition leaving him disoriented.

Takao laughed, a sound of both relief and fascination. "Those eyes, young Rei," he said, straightening his slightly disheveled clothing. "Those eyes are the key to you learning your abilities. My hypothesis is correct—your concept allows you to house entities within you."

He moved closer, his expression serious despite his earlier laughter. "Make those eyes yours, young Rei, or else they will overtake you and ruin us all."

Inside Rei's mind, he could see the chains reappearing on Hikito, binding him once more behind the blue door. The relief was palpable, but something about the ease with which he had regained control disturbed him.

Meanwhile, in the depths of Rei's consciousness, Hikito watched the chains encircle him again, his thoughts hidden from his host.

"Whatever my brother is, is terrifying," Hikito thought to himself. "He took over quicker than last time. Lucifer's return must come quickly before he learns what his concept actually is."

As the chains secured, Hikito's blue eyes continued to glow in the darkness of Rei's mind, watching, waiting for his next opportunity.
