The air around the demon thickened, pulsing with an oppressive force that seeped into the bones of every living being in the square. A slow, deliberate grin stretched across his grotesque face as he lifted one clawed hand, dark energy swirling around his fingers. The pressure in the air deepened, an unseen weight pressing down like an iron fist.
A deep, guttural incantation rumbled from his throat, the language incomprehensible yet carrying an undeniable sense of dread. "Vel'thras nor'khaal... kneel."
The moment the last syllable left his lips, an invisible force crashed down upon the square. The people of the city gasped, their bodies collapsing under the immense pressure. Some clutched their chests, their breathing ragged, while others simply crumpled to the ground, unable to resist the command. Even those with stronger wills, those who had not yet surrendered to fear, found their limbs unresponsive, their very willpower sapped by the suffocating darkness.
Rein clenched his teeth, trying to resist, but his knees buckled beneath him. Shilley let out a strangled gasp as she hit the cobblestones, her hands digging into the stone in a futile attempt to push herself up. Even Luxana, her celestial markings glowing faintly, struggled against the oppressive force pressing her down.
Xetran, however, was already muttering under his breath, his own shadows flickering unnaturally around him. "Well," he exhaled, his usual smirk barely concealing the sharp glint of calculation in his eyes, "this is a bit much for me." With a flick of his fingers, a faint shimmer of energy coiled around his wrists, slipping through the invisible bindings like a snake shedding its skin. He rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. "Hate to say it, but I'm not exactly a frontline fighter. I'll be taking my leave."
Rein, still straining against the force pinning him down, snapped his head toward him. "You bastard, "
But Xetran was already gone, his form vanishing in a wisp of shadow as he ported away, reappearing high above on a nearby rooftop, well out of reach of the demon’s spell. Below, the group cursed his name as he watched the chaos unfold with detached amusement.
The demon paid him no mind, his focus shifting toward the swirling abyss forming in the space before him. The air crackled with raw energy as he raised both arms, his voice booming with dark triumph. "The feast begins now! This city will be erased from existence!"
The rift tore open, an unholy gash in reality itself. The ground trembled violently, cracks spider-webbing outward as the howling void beyond the veil shrieked into existence. The barrier meant to protect this realm flickered, strained, its glow dimming as the demon poured his power into overwhelming it.
For a brief moment, he hesitated. A force, subtle yet unyielding, began to push back against his spell, threading through the fabric of reality itself. His eye flickered, sensing the resistance like an unseen hand holding the veil closed. It was faint, like a whisper against a storm, but undeniable. His sneer faltered, irritation flashing across his face before his grin widened, dark amusement settling in his expression.
"Futile," he muttered, dismissing the defiance with a growl before pressing harder, his will forcing the rift open wider, shoving aside whatever dared to stand against him.
A deep vibration hummed through the square as creatures stirred beyond the rift. Unseen forms moved in the abyss, their grotesque silhouettes writhing and clawing, eager to breach the thinning boundary.
Then, the barrier cracked.
Dark tendrils slithered through the breach, clawed hands gripping the edges, pulling the portal wider. From within, grotesque creatures began forcing their way through, some humanoid in shape, others little more than shifting masses of darkness and malice.
Luxana’s eyes, still burning with celestial power, snapped upward. The markings on her arms pulsed brighter, reacting to the sheer wrongness before her. A deep rage, wholly her own, surged through her veins, ignited by the desecration before her.
"Enough."
The word was a whisper, but it carried the weight of divinity.
The glow around her intensified, shifting from gold to something purer, something untamed. For a fraction of a second, the light around her wavered, uncontrolled, as if resisting her command. A faint tremor ran through her body, unnoticed by all but her closest allies. With a sheer force of will, she pushed against the spell holding her down. The weight upon her shattered like fragile glass, her body snapping upright in an instant. The force of her movement alone sent out a shockwave, rattling the very stones beneath her feet.
The demon’s triumphant gaze faltered. His eye narrowed. "What, "
Luxana didn’t hesitate. With a cry that split the air, she surged forward, her blade gleaming as she slashed through the thick, oppressive magic surrounding the rift. Divine energy trailed behind her strike, leaving a luminous arc in the darkness.
Her blade connected.
The rift convulsed violently, the demon shrieking in rage as the celestial energy ripped through the portal, severing its connection. The gathered horrors on the other side let out a collective wail as the tear in reality snapped shut like a slamming door, cutting them off from their prize.
A backlash of energy erupted from the collapsing rift, slamming into the demon and sending him staggering back. His skin, once untouched by mortal weapons, now bore a deep, searing wound across his chest. The glow of Luxana’s power lingered along the wound’s edges, preventing it from immediately regenerating.
The demon let out a guttural growl, his expression contorted in something between pain and fury. He clutched at the wound, his fingers twitching as if struggling to contain the burning purity now seared into him.
The square was silent for a single, suspended moment.

Then, as if reality itself had shifted, the power holding the city hostage dissipated. One by one, those who had been trapped in submission began to move again, gasping, coughing, staggering to their feet.
Luxana stood tall, her blade still glowing, her breath steady despite the power she had just unleashed. She turned her gaze onto the demon, her eyes sharp, unwavering.
"You will not have this city."
A sudden explosion of sound shattered the silence. The rift had been closed, but the demons that had already slipped through wasted no time in sowing chaos. The city square, once the heart of defiance, was now a battleground of horror and confusion.
Screams rang out as the first wave of demonic creatures lunged at the panicked civilians. The city guards, though rattled, rallied quickly, forming defensive lines to protect the people. Some wielded spears and shields, bracing against the onslaught, while others, robed in Senthos' colors, chanted spells, casting protective barriers and elemental magic to push back the darkness. Bolts of fire and arcs of lightning clashed against the abyssal monstrosities, illuminating the night in flashes of violent brilliance.
But the demons were not mere beasts of flesh and claw. Some flickered like living shadows, slipping past swords and spears as if intangible, only to materialize behind their prey, dragging them into the abyss with shrieks that would haunt the living. Others moved like black mist, seeping into the mouths and noses of their victims, twisting their bodies from within until bones snapped and flesh tore apart in grotesque displays of possession. A veteran guardsman raised his sword high, only to freeze in place, eyes rolling back as darkness consumed him from within, his own blade then turning on his comrades.
Amidst the carnage, Luxana moved with divine purpose, carving through the horde with radiant strikes. But as she lifted her blade high for a powerful finishing blow against a particularly massive demon, something went terribly wrong.
The golden light surged from her, but unlike before, it was wild, uncontrolled. A wave of raw celestial energy erupted from her form, sweeping across the battlefield in a dazzling yet merciless arc. For an instant, it seemed as though she had turned the tide, but the moment of victory soured as several nearby civilians were caught in the blast.
A man staggered back, his skin burned by the divine radiance. Another collapsed entirely, his breath stolen from his lungs by the sheer force of Luxana’s unleashed might. Cries of pain and confusion replaced the defiant shouts from before. Eyes that had once been filled with hope now stared at her in fear.
The demon lord’s laughter boomed across the battlefield, rich with mockery. "Ah, and there it is! The great savior, branding her own flock in the name of righteousness! Tell me, lightborn, how many more will you scorch before you see that you are no different from me?"
Luxana’s breath caught. Her grip on her sword faltered, her confidence wavering as guilt wrapped around her heart like chains. She barely had time to process the weight of what she had done before a sudden, crushing blow struck her side.
The demon moved faster than she could react. A blackened fist, wreathed in abyssal flame, slammed into her with devastating force. The impact sent her hurtling through the air, crashing through a merchant’s stall and skidding across the blood-streaked cobblestone. Dust and debris clouded the air as her body finally came to rest against a broken pillar, motionless.
Rein and Shilley watched in horror as Luxana lay still, the golden glow around her flickering weakly. "Luxana!" Rein shouted, his voice raw with panic. Shilley echoed him, scrambling toward her fallen form, but the chaos of battle raged around them, forcing them to hesitate. The battlefield raged on, but for them, time seemed to slow.
They were now alone against the demon lord.
Rein and Shilley exchanged a glance, silent understanding passing between them. This was their fight now. They had trained together, battled side by side, and they would face this enemy together. Rein rolled his shoulders, flexing his grip on his sword, while Shilley spun her staff in a tight arc, readying herself.
The two launched forward in perfect sync, Rein closing the distance with a swift dash while Shilley covered him with a barrage of arcane bolts. The demon barely moved, his singular eye tracking them with an amused glint. At the last moment, he shifted, parrying Rein’s blade with a clawed hand while simultaneously dodging Shilley’s attacks, his movements eerily fluid.
"Predictable," the demon sneered, lashing out with a dark tendril. Rein ducked low, pivoting on his heel and slashing at the limb, forcing the demon back a step. Shilley capitalized on the opening, chanting a rapid incantation as vines of brambles erupted from the ground, coiling around their foe’s legs.
The demon snarled, attempting to break free, but Rein was already pressing the attack. His sword glowed faintly as he muttered an incantation under his breath, the edge of the blade igniting with magical energy. With a powerful upward slash, he carved a glowing arc through the air, the enchanted strike colliding with the demon’s torso and forcing him back.
A dark chuckle escaped the demon’s lips. "Impressive... for insects."
With a flick of his wrist, a massive shockwave of telekinetic force blasted outward. Rein and Shilley were hurled backward. Shilley managed to twist midair, landing with feline grace, but Rein crashed hard against a broken part of the cobblestone, stumbling as he tried to regain his footing.
He barely had time to recover before he saw what was happening, Shilley, surrounded. Several demons had broken away from the larger fight, sensing an opportunity to overwhelm the mage. Shilley spun, slashing her staff through the air as magic surged outward in waves of force, but they kept coming.
"Shilley!" Rein shouted, panic creeping into his voice. Without a second thought, he sprinted toward her.
The demon lord saw his moment.
With a wicked grin, he lifted one clawed hand, abyssal energy crackling in his palm. The air vibrated with sheer power as he hurled a bolt of dark magic toward Rein, a spell designed to rip him apart on impact.
Shilley saw it first. Her instincts kicked in, and without hesitation, she lunged. Her hand shot outward, summoning a shield of twisting thorns in front of her. The barrier took the brunt of the attack, but it was not enough.
The explosion tore through the shield, the force of the impact slamming into her. Shilley gasped as pain lanced through her body, her vision blurring. She felt herself being thrown back, the world spinning, before she crashed into Rein’s arms.
"Shilley!" Rein’s voice was raw with fear as he caught her, lowering her gently to the ground. Blood stained her robes, her breathing shallow.
She managed a weak smile, her fingers lightly grasping at his sleeve. "You’re making that face again… I hate it when you do that…"
Rein’s throat tightened. "You shouldn’t have, "
"Did I… do good, Rein?" she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
His grip on her tightened as he brushed her hair back from her face. "You did. You always do."
Shilley’s eyelids fluttered. "You’re not allowed… to cry before I do…"
Then, she went still."
Devin weaved through the chaos, loosing arrows with precision, each shot striking true. A soldier beside him screamed as a demon lunged, its jagged claws poised to rip through flesh. Devin reacted instinctively, his arrow buried deep in its skull before the creature could finish its kill.
"Hold the line!" he shouted, rallying the nearby fighters.
The battle surged around him, but he refused to let panic take hold. He moved swiftly, ducking between crumbling stone and wounded bodies, always keeping his bow drawn. One of the larger demons broke from the fray, setting its hollow, abyssal eyes on him. Devin barely had time to react as the beast pounced. He rolled at the last second, his hands moving automatically, loosing three arrows in rapid succession. The creature shrieked as the final arrow struck its exposed throat, its massive form collapsing in a heap.
But when his gaze flicked toward the battlefield’s center, his stomach twisted.
Rein and Shilley were down. And he was too far away to help.
