Since I had already demonstrated my ability to make anything I imagine, I could picture Mr. Blonde giving me a weird look, asking for a sleeping bag or similar accommodations.
I looked at the floor my summoner pointed at to estimate how big a mattress I could make for myself before I’d be overstepping my boundaries as his roommate. He already welcomed the compromise of having to share this room with me. The least I could do was try to be as little of an inconvenience as possible.
Making an air mattress would have to come later, since I’m not certain as to how an air mattress valve is designed, and this didn’t feel like a time to experiment with my powers.
Something I’m certain I would be more comfortable making is a memory foam mattress. I’ve seen enough foam to know what it can feel like across different textures and feels.
I wouldn’t be able to call it an accurate recreation, but it should at least serve as a viable bed. Of course, a backup plan would be a simple single-sized spring mattress.
The first thing to do is to imagine a foam with the properties of memory foam. Easy to squish with little resistance, and takes longer to return to its original shape.
I looked at my summoner, who was staring at me. I looked at my hand and imagined myself holding a small cube of foam.
The cube manifested, and my summoner sounded intrigued at its appearance.
To test its properties, I squished it in my hand before releasing my grip.
It felt too easy to squish, and it didn’t return to its original cube shape after the expected time. I placed the cube on the table before looking at my empty hand.
Memory foam has more give than that. Perhaps I should make it more rigid.
Another cube of foam manifested in my hand. While the initial one was yellowish white, this one was black and felt more rigid to the touch, like packaging foam that breaks instead of squishes.
Ok, I just need to imagine a middle ground between the two.
I closed my eyes and visualized myself pressing a hand into the foam, which slowly returned to its original shape—a good three seconds.
The softness and texture reminded me of a pillow and bed topper I had before I moved.
A slab of foam appeared in my hands, matching what I had visualized. I squished it, and it felt exactly as I remembered. I squished it a few more times to test its springiness, and it returned to its exact shape within the expected time for all attempts.
I morphed its shape to make it more suitable as a pillow, removing the edges it had.
Now, I just need a pillow cover that’s cool to the touch.
My first idea was to use silk, but that felt too slippery to put my head on and sleep. Cotton’s out of the question since that tends to be rough to the touch.

What’s a good fabric to use for pillow covers?
I saw my summoner’s bed and his pillows, placed neatly on his made bed.
I looked my summoner in the eyes before pointing to his pillows, hoping to convey my asking permission to handle them.
His head moved between my hand and his pillow before moving to grab one and throwing it at me, which I deflected after tossing aside the slab of memory foam I was holding.
After I picked up both and placed the incomplete memory foam pillow on the table, I inspected the cover of the pillow I slapped away. It felt no different from a standard pillow cover you’d see on a simple bedding set. The texture was gentle and welcoming to the skin.
I put my head to it, but immediately smelled something fragrant. Reflexively, I pushed it away.
Was it just washed?
I slowly brought the pillow to me once more and gave it a sniff while maintaining a distance from my head.
Either my summoner does his laundry regularly, or there’s something else I should be careful of.
My summoner gave me a confused look.
I tossed the pillow back to him before imagining a pillow cover of a similar texture suited to my memory foam slab. Partly through making it, I nearly forgot that memory foam pillows have a zipped-up cover that snuggly fits the entire thing.
Fuck, I need to make a zipper now.
Zippers are designed in a way that the teeth can only come together if their teeth are inserted into each other at an angle. It gets its name likely because of the “zip” sound it makes when you pull on the tab up or down to lock or unlock the mechanism.
I tried imagining a zipper until I realized I didn’t know what one would look like for a pillow.
Fuck it, no zipper.
I imagined the first pillow case covering the slab of memory down, no zipper, just an awkward opening.
I recalled the push-button mechanisms jackets used, and decided I’d settle for that until I can properly make a zipper using Imagination Manifestation.
Buttons manifested in the fabric of the opening, protruding buttons on one side, and the insert buttons on the other. I then snapped the opening closed, before making a second pillow cover using my summoner’s pillow cover as a reference.
Finally, I had completed my first pillow. It took a lot longer than instantaneous, but it should do the trick.
After I finished making the pillow, I looked to my summoner, only to see he had a confused look on his face, even raising an eyebrow.
Welp. That’s step one completed, onto the next one.
I pointed my palm toward the floor, ready to make a mattress, when I realized something.
What does the inside of a mattress look like again?
I know foam mattresses and spring mattresses exist, but now I’ve realized I’ve never considered how they’re designed to ensure comfort for everyone who sleeps on them.
I looked at the table and saw the 2 foam cubes I had nearly forgotten about, and held them as I thought about mattresses, then sat.
Since it’ll be taking my entire body’s weight, I’ll need to make sure it’s soft enough to ensure my spine is straight while sleeping on it, but also not too soft to sleep like I’m sinking into foam.
How should I arrange the foams? Rigid foam bottom, Memory foam on top? How many layers would be optimal? Should I try making a foam with a different springiness and rigidity?
As I racked my brain to visualize a mattress designed for optimal comfort, I heard my summoner shout.
I turned around in my chair and saw him dressed in a jacket and pants, holding his room key.
I checked my pocket and pulled out my room 61 key, and saw his expression shift slightly. It feels as if he’s annoyed with me being his roommate.
He approached me and tugged my arm, holding the key and dragging me to the door. I merely complied, unsure of what was happening.
We walked out of his room, and he locked the door.
After taking me through a hall and a turn, he opened a door that didn’t look like a dorm room entrance. He opened and went inside to retrieve some bundled blankets.
We returned to our room and he laid the blankets down next to his bed, one on top of the other, before taking the memory foam pillow I had created and dropping it on the blanket close to his bed rest. He then spoke some syllables before getting under his covers and closing his eyes.
I produced a blanket of my own before moving to check the window. The sun hadn’t set yet. Are classes that exhausting?
I checked on my summoner, and he was already fast asleep, his chest rhythmically rising and falling as he slept.
