Chapter-28- The Universal Law

Jian Zhi stepped into the dark path behind the bookshelf. A chill breeze whispered from the depths, and the lantern in his hand cast flickering shadows that danced along the stone walls. With each step deeper into the gloom, the air grew colder and the silence more profound, until the only sounds were the echo of his footsteps and the rhythm of his own breath. He finally arrived at a small chamber where a single table stood. Upon it rested a dusty ink pot, a worn pen, and two ancient books. Jian Zhi sat in the wooden chair and opened the first book. It contained the Bazi chart of Lǐ Wěi.

The Bazi Chart of Lǐ Wěi:

  · Overall Elemental Composition: A severe and volatile imbalance.

  · Dominant Element: Fire (火 - Huǒ). This was not the righteous fire of passion, but a consuming, destructive wildfire. It represented his burning ambition, his volatile rage, and his insatiable need for recognition that ultimately consumed everything, including himself.

  · Extreme Excess: Wood (木 - Mù). An overabundance of Wood acted as endless fuel for his destructive Fire. This represented the constant, bitter memories of his past that fed his resentment, making it impossible for the fire to die down.

  · Fatal Imbalance: A Complete Lack of Water (真水缺失 - Zhēn Shuǐ Quēshī). He completely lacked the Water element. For Lǐ Wěi, this meant he had no capacity for calm, adaptability, or emotional cooling. His psyche had no way to quench the fire or flow around obstacles; it could only burn and consume.

  · Weakened Element: Metal (金 - Jīn). The element of structure, discipline, and morality was present but critically weak, unable to control the rampant Fire and Wood. It represented the faint, ignored voice of his conscience.

  · Utterly Absent: Earth (土 - Tǔ). He had no Earth, the element of stability, nurture, and grounding. This reflected the complete lack of a stable, loving foundation in his life, leaving him emotionally and spiritually adrift.

In essence, his soul was a powder keg of Fire and Wood, with no Water to cool it and no Earth to ground it. It was only a matter of time before it exploded.

His Soul Beast was The Cunning Fox (狡狐 - Jiǎo Hú). This Fox was not merely cunning; it was a creature of pure, spiteful vanity and narcissistic injury, reflecting the very worst parts of him.

His Guardian Beast was The Rooster (公鸡 - Gōngjī). Just like his brother, his Guardian Beast was a Rooster, a symbol of hope and the heralding of a new dawn. It represented the potential for a different path, the chance to prove his worth through righteousness.

Following the Bazi chart, Jian Zhi found his personal words, a diary entry that detailed his spiritual collapse.

"He beat me again. Always him. The 'Sword Saint.' The perfect son. Every look from the crowd was a dagger. I could hear the Fox laughing in the back of my mind. 'See?' it whispered. 'They will never see you. You are forever in his shadow.'

I retreated to my solitude, the Rooster within me trying to crow, to speak of patience, of a new day... but its voice was so faint. The Fox circled it, its voice a silken poison. 'Hope? For what? For their pity? They denied you your value. They made you a mistake.'

The Rooster tried to stand its ground, to defend the last shred of my soul. 'Do not listen! There is another way!' it cried.

The Fox merely smiled, a vicious, predatory thing. 'There is only one way to be seen,' it hissed. 'You do not beg for the light. You become the fire that burns so brightly they have no choice but to look.'

And then it pounced. It was not a physical battle, but a spiritual evisceration. The Fox, fueled by all my years of hatred and envy, tore into the Rooster. There was no glorious fight. There was only the silencing of hope. The last thing I felt was the Rooster's light being snuffed out, its final cry cut short.

When I opened my eyes, the Fox was sitting proudly, licking its paws. The forest of my soul was silent. There was no more dawn. Only the eternal, satisfying twilight of my own rage. The Fox looked at me, and I looked back through its eyes. We are one now. And soon, everyone will see."

With his Guardian Beast—his spiritual conscience—destroyed, the Fox (his untamed Shadow Self) achieved total dominance. As Jian Zhi read the account of the clan massacre that followed, he could mentally simulate the scenes, feeling the profound suffering of a soul completely subsumed by its own darkness. He realized a fundamental truth: when someone completely yields to their inner self without mastery, that is when they surrender their outer self to ruin.

"[Sigh...]" Jian Zhi's eyes scanned the dark chamber, a profound understanding dawning on him. "You deserved better," he whispered to the memory of the man who had become his enemy.

His gaze then fell upon the second book, its cover inscribed with the title: The Celestial Path of Inner Conquest (天道内征 - Tiāndào Nèi Zhēng). Driven by a burning curiosity, he opened it and began to read, unaware that he was about to uncover the very laws that governed the soul.

The Celestial Path of Inner Conquest (天道内征 - Tiāndào Nèi Zhēng)

Core Principle: True power, known as 魂光 (Hún Guāng - Soul-Light), is not an external force to be gathered. It is the internal radiance of a soul that has achieved self-mastery. The brutal truth of this world is that your greatest enemy does not stand before you, but within you. To conquer the outer world, one must first conquer the inner landscape. A chaotic soul can never wield orderly power; a fearful soul can never manifest courageous light.

The Three Pillars of Heavenly Destiny (天命三基 - Tiānmìng Sān Jī)

  1. Destiny's Tapestry (命盘 - Mìngpán)This is the unchangeable spiritual constitution one is born with. It defines the raw materials and inherent challenges of a lifetime.

  · Elemental Roots (五行根骨 - Wǔxíng Gēngǔ): This is the core balance of the Five Phases within a soul. A perfect, harmonious balance is a theoretical myth; every individual is defined by their unique imbalance, which dictates their natural inclinations, strengths, and fatal flaws.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

  · Wood (木 - Mù): The phase of growth and vitality. Individuals are nurturing, creative, and focused on long-term expansion. They are natural healers, builders, and strategists. In imbalance, it leads to stubbornness, uncontrolled spreading of one's focus, or a naive trust that can be easily exploited.

  · Fire (火 - Huǒ): The phase of transformation and passion. Individuals are charismatic, action-oriented, and intense. They are natural warriors, leaders, and revolutionaries. In imbalance, it leads to recklessness, a volatile temper, a tendency to "burn out" quickly, and destructive rage.

  · Earth (土 - Tǔ): The phase of stability and nurture. Individuals are patient, practical, reliable, and defensive. They are the guardians, administrators, and farmers—the bedrock of any society. In imbalance, it leads to stagnation, extreme inflexibility, and resistance to change.

  · Metal (金 - Jīn): The phase of structure and sharpness. Individuals are disciplined, righteous, determined, and value order. They are exemplary soldiers, judges, and scholars. In imbalance, it leads to cold, emotionless judgment, rigidity, and harsh criticism.

  · Water (水 - Shuǐ): The phase of adaptability and wisdom. Individuals are intelligent, calm, persuasive, and fluid in their thinking. They are master diplomats, spies, and tacticians. In imbalance, it leads to indecisiveness, a lack of core principles, and emotional volatility.

  · Soul Beast (本命魂兽 - Běnmìng Húnshòu): This is the manifested spirit of one's primal nature. It is a wild, untamed entity residing in the soul, representing a person's deepest instincts and inherent personality. The journey of cultivation is the journey to confront and integrate this beast.

  · Guardian Beast (护命生肖 - Hùmìng Shēngxiào): The zodiac sign of one's birth year provides a passive, stabilizing influence. It does not grant active power but acts as a spiritual anchor, preventing the soul from completely shattering during the perilous internal conquest. It is the silent protector in the darkness of the self.

  2. The Heart's Domain (心域 - Xīnyù)This is a metaphysical plane, a personalized world unique to each individual, constructed from their memories, emotions, and elemental affinities. To grow in power, one must learn to enter this state through deep meditation and navigate its dangers.

  · Seeking Elemental Pivots (寻元枢 - Xún Yuánshū): Within this domain, one must find the crystallized manifestations of the elements they lack. These are not new elements, but the keys to awakening the dormant potential of those aspects within their own soul.

  · The Confrontation (伏魂兽 - Fú Húnshòu): The ultimate goal. The cultivator must seek out their own Soul Beast and engage it in a battle of pure will. Victory is achieved not by destroying the beast, but by understanding, accepting, and finally, mastering it. This integration turns base instincts into honed tools.

  3. Hún Guāng(魂光 -Soul-Light )The successful integration of the self causes the soul to radiate a tangible energy—Soul-Light. The color, nature, and potency of this light are direct reflections of the individual's inner state.

  · A well-integrated, balanced soul produces a brilliant, stable, and potent Hún Guāng.· A conflicted or partially mastered soul produces a flickering, unstable, or dim Hún Guāng.

  Combat Applications:

The versatility of Hún Guāng is limited only by the user's imagination and self-mastery.

  · Hún Guāng Hùbì (魂光护壁 - Soul-Light Ward): A protective barrier whose strength is a direct measure of the user's spiritual fortitude.

  · Hún Guāng Bīngfēng (魂光兵锋 - Soul-Light Weapon's Edge): Coating a weapon in Hún Guāng, temporarily elevating a mundane blade to supernatural sharpness and durability.

·Hún Guāng Zhànjiǎ (魂光战甲 - Soul-Light War-Armor): Wrapping the body in a suit of solidified light, drastically enhancing physical capabilities and providing formidable protection.

  · Hún Guāng Bù (魂光步 -Soul-Light Steps ): Concentrating light in the feet for explosive speed, vertical running, or brief air-stepping.

  · Hún Guāng Chōngjí (魂光冲击 -Soul-Light Impact ): Firing a raw, projectile-like blast of concentrated energy.

  · Hún Guāng Gǎnzhī (魂光感知 -Soul-Light Perception): Extending one's light outwards like a sonar pulse to sense the presence and nature of other Soul-Light users.

  A Treatise on Soul Beasts

The following are documented manifestations of the Soul Beast, though this list is not exhaustive. The nature of a beast is not inherently good or evil; it is the mastery over it that defines the individual.

  · Gray Wolf (灰狼 - Huī Láng): In its untamed state, it embodies ferocity and territorial pack mentality. When mastered, its traits become fierce loyalty, strategic coordination in battle, unyielding perseverance, and a powerful instinct to protect one's comrades.

  · Fox (狐狸 - Húli): The untamed Fox is characterized by trickery, evasiveness, and self-preservation above all else. Once integrated, these traits transform into remarkable adaptability, clever problem-solving, social grace, and the ability to gather information and navigate complex situations.

  · Viper (毒蛇 - Dúshé): A soul bound to the Viper struggles with cunning, deceit, and a patient nature geared toward ambush. Its mastery yields supreme tactical patience, the ability to perceive and exploit critical weaknesses with precision, and deep insight into an opponent's nature.

  · Rabbit (兔 - Tù): The untamed Rabbit is plagued by timidity, anxiety, and a skittish follower's mentality. When conquered, it grants incredible vigilance, rapid perception of danger, swift and evasive movement, and a strong, protective sense of community—the defense of the "warren."

  · Eagle (鹰 - Yīng): An uncontrolled Eagle spirit is marked by predatory sharpness, arrogance, and isolation. A master of the Eagle gains keen strategic oversight, incredible perception and foresight, and the ability to strike decisively from a position of advantage, commanding any situation.

The Universal Law (世间共法 - Shìjiān Gòng Fǎ)

This Path is the universal method for attaining power in this world. It is open to all, yet few walk it to its end, for the journey is fraught with spiritual danger. Power comes not from changing your nature, but from mastering the materials you were born with. Your elemental flaws are not chains to break, but keys to unlock your highest self.

Those who succeed become living testaments to self-mastery. Those who fail may become slaves to their own nature, as tragically demonstrated by the late Magistrate Lǐ Wěi, whose Fox soul consumed him completely when his Guardian Beast fell.

Thus speaks the ancient text, "To command the world, first command the world within."

Jian Zhi closed the book, the weight of its knowledge settling upon him. "[Sigh...] So I still have a lot to do, huh!" he murmured, a determined smirk touching his lips as he stared into the flickering lantern light, the laws of the soul now etched into his mind.
