Chapter 24: There Is No Free Lunch

  “Hurry—hurry up! Just up ahead!”

Despite getting urged by Lackey B, Yu Zhiye still casually strolled along with hands in his pockets.

“What’s the rush? I only have two legs and can only go so fast… Man, it’s so hot… if only somebody would carry me...”

  “You—!”

Lackey B’s face was beet red in anger, but there wasn’t much he can do. He wasn’t willing to lower himself to carry this jerk, especially since their destination was so far out!

But it didn’t matter. They were almost there, anyways!

In fact, the loud argument ahead was already filtering into their ears.

“...many times did I tell you?! We already mapped out this route yesterday!”

“Then why did he fall in? Don’t tell me our guide is directionally-challenged and can’t even remember the correct way.”

“Madaraka! How am I supposed to know?! We got this far with absolutely zero problems yesterday! Who knows why there’s suddenly a pit here!”

“Who knows? Maybe you do! Good thing we had your people explore the way first. Otherwise, heh. Maybe it would’ve been us in there! What safe route? Fart!”

“Baldie! What are you trying to say?! Don’t think you can say whatever you want!”

“Aeuugh?! Got a problem?! What? Can’t handle a little truth? Guilty conscience?”

“Madaraka! Say that again! Do you think I don’t dare to beat you?!”

“Ohoho, now, now, calm down you two. Now should not be the time to be pointing fingers.”

“Yes, Mr. Kim is right. Think about how to save others first… oh, look! Our hero is here!”

Right on cue, the four quarreling men all turned their gaze to the pair joining them.

As soon as Lackey B rejoined the group, he left his escort target behind, scurried over to the four-eyes, and started whispering into his ears, “Boss...”

Yu Zhiye wasn’t able to hear what he said, but it should be nothing good. Still, he didn’t care.

He simply took the chance to do a quick survey of the situation.

A team of six came out to explore earlier.

Four-eyes with his lackey. The pot-bellied uncle following the baldie. Finally, Mob Characters B and C.

Now, five were left. The one missing was… Mob Character C. The one going by the name Han Duri.

And as expected, Yu Zhiye saw him stuck in the quicksand in the background. More than half his upper body already went under.

Good grief. It has probably been more than an hour, but here they were still arguing and pushing around responsibilities!

Now, it seems they want to push this responsibility on him.

“You—yellow-faced brat! Don’t just stand around like a dumbass! Get over here and fish Duri out! Quick!”

That rude and aggressive tone. Yu Zhiye didn’t like it one bit. So he just stood there, crossed his arms, and sneered. “If you think I’m easy to push around, then think again.”

Park Insu’s face fell. “Madaraka! With those scrawny arms, why are you acting all high-and-mighty? Scram over here now! Don’t make me force you!”

Yu Zhiye simply ignored the braindead maniac and inspected his sandy fingers like there were infinite mysteries hidden in their nails.

This caused Park Insu to almost blow his top!

But Kim Sungho quickly stepped out to smooth things out.

“Ohoho, Mr. Park, there’s no need to get so agitated. If you want to ask for help, how can you be so rude? You must speak nicely, speak nicely.”

“Fatso, it’s not your turn to teach me what to—!”

“Aeeuughh! What did you just call him?!” Baldie Tae blocked Park Insu’s way. “Dog, you picking a fight?!”

  “Madaraka! Who’s afraid of who!”

  “Aeeeuggh?!”

Just when they were about to butt heads, four-eyes finally stepped forward.

“Now, now. Mr. Park, Mr. Tae, please restrain yourselves. Using fists isn’t going to solve anything. How about let me take over here?”

Park Insu seethed through his teeth, but seeing that everybody was now against him, he gave in. “Good. Good! I don’t care what you do. I just want the results! Duri must be saved today… or else!”

The man took a step back then glared at Yu Zhiye like a venomous snake about to pounce.

But Yu Zhiye didn’t care and returned a smile. “Hey, I know I am handsome, but you don’t have to keep looking at me like that.”

The others stared at that plain and average face. No comment.

“Ahem. Mr. Steve…” Kwan Minhwoo plastered on his best smile. “Please don’t blame Mr. Park for being overly rude. He’s just worried about his friend. Speaking of this...”

“How about we put the past behind and help each other out a little? What say you?”

Yu Zhiye was obviously not going to be swayed so easily.

“Hey, I like talking to smart people. Mr. Kwan, I’m sure somebody smart like you understand the basic principles of life.”

  “Hmm? And that is…?”

“There’s no free lunch in this world.”

That silenced the man. Right on cue, his lackey jumped out to play the wingman.

“You—why are you blabbing so much! You should be honored that Boss Kwan is showing so much kindness to you! You should just do as he says!”

“Eh. Minho, don’t be rude.” The four-eyes smirked. “This is a life we are talking about. I’m sure our friend here has the greater good in his heart and will agree after thinking over it for a bit.”

“Still need to think over it for a bit?!” Park Insu pushed his way to the front and growled. “Madaraka! What is there even to think about! Either you do it, or I force you to!”

  “Now, now, Mr. Park…”

“Shut up! I’m not talking to you!” Park Insu seemed to slowly grow in size and stared down at Yu Zhiye. “Now, I give you two choices—”

  “—I choose the third choice.”

That cheeky response seemed to snap a string and the beast was fully unleashed.

“Hurhurhur…” A strong grip choked Yu Zhiye by the neck and lifted him off his feet. “Madaraka! Do you really think I don’t dare to kill you? Anyways, this isn’t my first time!”
