97. Jenny

Jenny felt like being a super hero was a lot more boring than she expected. It was nice to be able to help people, but those two they saved were still sleeping. Plus, since her daddy was still a chrysalis and Higgins was gone, they were supposed to just wait in this stranger’s house and hide. They didn’t even have any good food. It was all vegetables and fruits with no candy. She bet nobody ever came to their house on Halloween.

“Can you feel him out there yet?” Mommy asked Jenny about Higgins again after she gave the strangers some water.

“Ummm,” Jenny closed her eyes and focused on any life she could sense around her. Mommy and Daddy next to her, the two strangers they saved after that, but further past the house, there were nothing but bugs and a couple small mice that were Changed, but still felt mostly like mice. Jenny shook her head, “Nope. Nothing. Can we go to the store and get some good food Mommy? This house sucks.”

“Don’t use that kind of language, honey, it’s not nice.” Mommy chided.

“Sorry,” Jenny hung her head in apology and asked again, “So can we please go? Please?”

Mommy smiled, but it was that smile that meant she was going to say no, “Maybe we can try after your dad wakes up from his nap. For now, we need to be careful. If we get hurt, then who’s going to protect your dad and these poor sleeping people?”

That was a good point. Mommy was so smart sometimes. Good food was awesome, but as a hero, Jenny needed to make sure she was protecting the people. Save people first, then good snacks after. Good snacks, of course. “Okay, but I think we should get ice cream from the store when we go.”

Mommy laughed, but she sounded sad for some reason. She smiled and hugged Jenny, “Lots of ice cream.”

“Oh,” Jenny said as she felt Mister Higgins nearby, but her eyes went wide when she felt more than just him, “Mister Higgins is running back to us, but there are three Changed chasing him.

“Three?” Mommy said, eyes going wide with worry.

Jenny nodded, then hid her face partway in her shirt, “They feel hungry.”

“We need to be brave Jenny,” Mommy sent a pulse of comfort to Jenny and it made her feel much safer, “Higgins needs us to be heroes. Will you help me save him? I can’t do it without you.”

Jenny squeezed her eyes then nodded. She could do this. She could save Higgins and Mommy and Daddy. “I can be brave, Mommy.”

“Okay, this is going to take a lot from you, but just remember I’ll keep you safe while you keep everyone else safe. Together, we are invincible.”

Mommy's words made all of Jenny’s fear wash away. Mommy had checked in Jenny’s closet and under her bed and scared away monsters all her life. If she said they were invincible, it had to be true. A smile grew on Jenny’s face and she spoke with the confidence of a hero, “Let’s save Mister Higgins.”

“Okay, get both Greenies ready and do what I say,” Mommy explained the plan and Jenny’s excitement grew even more.
