10: Class Roster

Maverick sneaked inside, careful not to make too much noise. He gently closed the front door, and then a loud and beastly snore echoed through the house. It made Maverick jump in his skin before he took a breath. ‘So she is asleep,’ he thought. Maverick then became quietly giddy like a child with a new toy. He was eager to test out his new abilities. Anyone else would be too after getting what is essentially superpowers for the first time. Maverick used bio-spirit infusion to strengthen his arm, then he lifted one of the chairs. It was as easy to lift as if it were made of styrofoam. Maverick was elated and continued to infuse different parts of his body with spirituality. But then he got a skull-splitting headache and dropped the stool he was holding above him. It came down with a crash and injured Maverick further. Maverick froze and stifled his yelp as he looked at his sister’s door. Moments later, he heard her earth-shattering snore and breathed a sigh of relief. Maverick decided to call it a night and go to bed. The next morning his headache was better but not by much.

“You don’t look so good. When did you get home last night?” Mary asked as Maverick stepped into the common room.

  “Late,” Maverick answered succinctly.

“Right, how many more of these late nights do you have left?”

“Last night was the last, I think, but I’m an officer now.” Maverick meekly smiled as he grabbed the bridge of his nose.

“Really!” Mary celebrated. “That means a pay increase, right?”

Maverick chuckled before gathering his things. “I’ll discuss it with my superior.”

  “Have a good day,”

  “Thanks, Mary.”

Today, Maverick decided to use the police station's entrance to the ESP headquarters instead of the covert bakery entrance. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was supposed to do, so he just headed for Herald’s workspace when he was stopped by Clive.

“Hello, newbie, I’ve been looking for you. How was your first ritual?” Clive greeted energetically.

I grimaced and grabbed the bridge of my nose. “It went well, I suppose,” Maverick said, trying his best to remain polite through the pain.

  “Are you ok?” Clive asked.

“Just a headache, no need to fret.”

  “Sounds like spiritual fatigue.”

Maverick looked up at him with a tired and curious expression.

“Its not uncommon for your spirit to be drained after an advancement ritual. But don’t make a habit of it. Being spiritually drained puts a strain on your body and could kill you in the right situation.” Clive held his hand over Maverick's forehead, and a faint white light emanated from him. Maverick’s headache subsided, and he took a breath.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

  “Thank you,” Maverick said.

“No problem, now come with me.” Clive grabbed Maverick’s wrist and practically dragged him. ‘He’s strong for a cleric.’ Maverick thought.

Clive dragged Maverick into another room where the others were waiting.

  “Good morning, Maverick.” Herald greeted

  “What’s going on?” Maverick asked

“I told you yesterday, don’t you remember?”

Maverick thought for a moment. “You said you would teach me more about mystics.”

  “Precisely.”

“Oh, I get it. Is everyone here to demonstrate?” Maverick asked as he looked around. “But where are the captain and Mark?”

“Those two are looking into a lead regarding the cult of corruption,” Hugh answered.

‘The ones who fed Maverick to the demon and then tried to kill me after I took over his body. Now that I think about it I should look into that. They might be responsible for my transmigration.’ Maverick thought.

Herald cleared his throat. “Anyway, there are many types of mystics. Within the ESP, there are four classes of mystics. There are five orders in each class, order one being the strongest. It’s best to learn about the different classes and abilities of your fellow officers so you can coordinate in the field.”

“What is your class, Maverick?” Hugh asks

“I’m a warrior,” Maverick answered plainly.

“Another warrior.” Clive proclaimed, annoyed, “I know warriors are some of the most common classes, but can we get at least one more cleric?”

“I sympathize, Clive. Another alchemist would be great,” Herald interjected.

“Since he is a warrior and already knows about them. I am not needed here.” Hugh said as he left.

Herald smiled and sighed. “That’s Hugh for you. Let’s just continue. Clive, do you want to start?”

“Sure. I’m an order five cleric; my abilities are basically healing and support-oriented. I can’t heal anything too egregious, mostly just minor injuries. Clerics also have bio-spirit infusion but not a lot of control, so we can be weak in combat.”

Anne then stood up. ”Hello, Maverick. My name is Anne. I don’t know if you remember me or not.” She said nervously.

“Yes, I remember. You are a druid, right?”

“Yes, I am. I’m an order five druid. Druids are good at tracking and communicating with spirits. If you ever want to make a pact, you should come to me.” Anne said excitedly before shrinking back into her seat.

“Thank you, you two. I’ll take it from here,” Herald said.

After the two had left, Maverick asked, “Why did they come just to give me an explanation you could have given me?”

Herald chuckled, “They heard about your demonic energy being spent during the ritual from Mark and wanted to confirm for themselves. Also… I couldn’t remember what abilities their classes had.” Herald admitted.

Maverick sighed and relaxed into his chair. “So there are warriors with profound physical strength, clerics who can heal, druids who can communicate with spirits and are good at tracking, and you, the alchemist, who is good at pissing people off.”

“Captain Clawford likes me,” Herald responded. “Anyway, alchemists can infuse spirit into inanimate things, like swords or arrows. Then those weapons become able to hurt spirits,” Herald bragged.

“Ok,” Maverick responded dryly. Not giving Herald the satisfaction of his attention. “If the lessons’ over, I have things to do.” Maverick got up and walked out.

Herald just chuckled to himself and went back to his workspace soon after. What Maverick was planning to do, however is find out more about the cult of corruption and the incident that he found himself in when he first got to this world.
