Chapter 21: By Law and Order.
~~~ [START]
In an enormous building that stretched to the heavens, a figure wearing a red cloak walked through its humongous gates. And although his steps were patient, his pace held onto swiftness and haste.
“Brother.” The figure, Aro, broke silence, eyes turned to Caius, who was standing to the front of him when he stopped. Then Aro’s head turned sideward, observing. “Your wife was expecting you—”
“Stop. I haven’t visited her in 500 winters. She doesn’t expect me.”
Aro just smiled at Caius’s words. Then, without waiting for another drain of a moment, Aro started walking away.
Caius’s hands clenched at Aro’s smile when he passed him.
“Was it your plan?” Caius questioned, his voice almost a whisper. “His escape?”
Aro’s feet halted the moment the words seeped past Caius’s lips. Then his head turned, and his eyes stared daggers at Caius, who was now staring back.
“I advised we bring more forces,” Caius’s eyes narrowed when he said it, “and repeatedly, I questioned why you’d only bring Jane. I explicitly stated she wouldn’t be enough—”
“What are you getting at… brother?” Aro’s voice cut next, its frequency as calm and soft as always.
“We could have brought Alec, Demetri, Eelga… there are so many you could have summoned to end him!”
Aro’s smile vanished at the words. “Could?”
Caius moved forward, raised an arm, then placed a hand on Aro’s shoulder. And Aro’s head turned to it, a frown seconds away from spoiling his face.
“His blood killed Marcus’s mate; you said it yourself.” Caius hissed. This time, unlike the last, his words had changed to whispers. “So why do we hesitate? Do you suppose I remind you of his danger… his powers… why?”
Aro shoved Caius’s hand away with little effort. Then, without response, he walked away.
Leaving Caius behind, whose face turned hideous, with eyes that brightened brighter, mimicking the resemblance of blood.
“What?!” Caius shouted, still facing Aro’s retreating back. “Do you fear him?! He is turning paler by the second, and the longer we take… the longer we wait, he will have turned into what we all fear! He is inbred, a creature! Why do you hesitate?!”
The sound from the closing gates behind them rumbled louder than his voice, maybe a direct sign from Hades to show a certain truth about his insignificance.
{ELSEWHERE}
On a mountaintop, with the moon floating in the darkness above it, a bright light shone over the trees, revealing two figures who sat atop its edge.
“So the whole thing was—”
“A misunderstanding.” Alice finished Troy’s words, hands folded between her legs, as they swung back and forth on the ledge below them. “We thought you would drink her.”
Troy shook his head. “That doesn’t even make sense. You people saw me in school; why would I drink blood? I don’t even need that shit.”
“You don’t need it?” Alice raised a brow with a whisper. But Troy sighed before the question could fully reach his ear. Then he stood, and she did the same after him.
“Did the guy they killed have anything on him?” he asked, backing away, with Alice following beside him.
Alice shook her head, smiling as her eyes trailed to his half-naked body. The smell of his blood was different. It was unlike any scent she had ever smelt; not like food, or one to quench the thirst. It was just alarmingly pleasant, as if the closer she got, the more a certain calm overtook her being.
“How are you doing this?” Alice asked. “You are literally breathing?”
Troy’s brows lifted. “He didn’t tell you?”
Then he stared away, and she followed closer, her shoulder unintentionally touching his naked arm.
“And what do you mean ‘you don’t need blood’?”
—---
{Hours Later}
Troy slowly opened the door as the light from the moon seeped in, while lightly grazing Honey, who was awake and staring right at him. But unlike before, she seemed too calm for normal, and his jacket was still slumped around her shoulders from the back.
Troy closed the door behind him after he got in, but not once did he break eye contact.
Then, he neared her figure and crouched to meet her eye-to-eye.
“I am so—”
But she kissed him, words silenced by lust.
He pulled back, then blinked.
“Will you trust me?” He asked the question, completely unprovoked.
Then, just like that, in the next few seconds, her life would never be the same again.
Because knowledge without order would never be overlooked.
Even by the heavens.
