  Chapter 12: Those Who Creep Among Us.

  ~~~ [START]
  “Just sit down.”
  The physics teacher didn’t even want to hear why Troy was late; he just climbed the incline, looked around the chokeboard’s frame, and then grabbed a chalk that was half the size of his pinky.
  Troy hurried with haste, and fortunately for him, he didn’t have to sit with Tyler because he found an empty desk at the far back. And even if he didn’t, Tyler was already seated with a classmate.
  “Cullen! What’s the definition of inertia?” The teacher asked, but much like a breeze, no one replied. So he turned back, eyes shifting around for a moment too much. “Where’s Cullen?”
  The question didn’t linger.
  “Jasper said he wasn’t feeling well.” A tiny girl with glasses said from the back. “He went to the nurse.”
  Some of the students exchanged glances of dread, not because they were worried about Jasper; in fact, it was far from that. Their only fear was because of Jasper’s absence; they all knew he was always the scapegoat when he wanted answers.
  And much as they feared, his eyes trailed around them, smacking when they stumbled on a fat kid, who was slumping on his seat, with his uniform somewhere between tattered and neat.
  “What’s the meaning of inertia, Caleb?” He asked with a smirk.
  “Dad, I—”
  “It’s Mr Macoy.” And the class burst into laughter at his words.
  Then he turned to the rest, while the majority bent their heads, trying with all effort to avoid eye contact without making it obvious that avoidance was their intention.
  “John?” Mr Macoy asked, but the kid didn’t answer; he just shook his head. “Ethan, Calsy, no one.”
  He nearly turned back to his board, but his eyes landed on Troy, who, unlike everyone else, made no effort to evade him.
  “You.” He tapped his forehead with a finger. “Adrian or something—”
  The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
  “Troy.”
  “Yes, Troy.” This time, he stepped forward. Hands folded behind him. “Tell them the meaning of inertia.”
  Troy shrugged his shoulders in indication that he didn’t know, but his actions were followed by a sigh when the man lifted his entrance test sheet.
  A devilish smile crept up his lips. “It was in your test, so tell them.”
  Troy took a moment, lightly shaking his head at the faint whispers beside him.
  “It’s the tendency of an object when it resists cha—”
  “You see that?” Mr Macoy turned to the other students. “He’s smart. So stop bullying my boy, my son is one of the dumb ones.”
  Everyone laughed when he winked at Caleb, who was already smiling with his head bent downward in embarrassment.
  “Inertia is the tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged… right, Caleb?”
  And again, everyone, including Calub himself, couldn’t help but chuckle.
  Too oblivious to the fact that they were seated with a monster. Something that mimicked the creatures who crept among them.
  {ELSEWHERE}
  Jasper closed his eyes with all his strength, hands trembling, with his fingers pushing against his palms with a force of giants.
  The smell was overwhelming; A girl in his class had entered the cycle of periods, which was something he could usually endure, but this time, she wasn’t the only one; it seemed that there were three other girls who were deemed with the same fate.
  Then suddenly, a figure flashed past the halls and reached Jasper in nothing less than a moment.
  “Stay calm.” The figure, a girl with long golden hair that matched the colour of her eyes, spoke, turning him around to stare upward.
  “Blood.” Jasper cried in agony; his throat had gotten so dry that his restraint replaced the need for blood with pain.
  “No, no no.” She slapped him a couple of times. “You don’t, you can hold it in.”
  “Edythe.” He said, eyes widened, with his hands tightening on her arm. “I need blood… Please.”
  Then, after a moment of hesitation, she lifted him, hung his left arm around her shoulders, and vanished.
  Leaving small creaks of evidence on the tiled floor below them. Evidence that would soon be vanquished in two moons to come.
  {ELSEWHERE} {HOURS LATER}
  “Yo, I don’t even know you!” Troy said, bewilderment lurking in his tone.
  As the girl he was staring at pouted after him, eyes gazing upward, mimicking the lens of a mutt.
  She was a classmate who, for some reason, thought he was required to buy her lunch, saying it had something to do with pretty privilege, and how good-looking people should ‘hang’ with each other.
  “Come on, Troy.” She begged, “You know I was kidding about the… good-looking thing.”
  Honey appeared behind them, “Malissa.”
  The girl raised a brow when she turned to her, then she turned her eyes back to Troy, and back to Honey again.
  “You…” Her eyes kept darting between them.
  Honey just shook her head, pinched Troy on the arm, then walked away as he followed behind her.
  Leaving Malissa, who was muttering to herself like a broken record.
  “Already making friends, huh?” Honey taunted. As Troy offered her a piece of gum.
  “Yeah, it’s kinda weird.” Troy smiled when he said it. “One of them even offered gum in exchange for a kiss, can you believe it?”
