Prologue

A woman sat on the grass, resting her back against a tree near a wide lake. In front of her is a child who is drawing something on his sketchpad. She slightly leans forward to take a look. “What’cha drawing there, sweetie?”

“This place, mom.” The kid says, his attention still on the sketchpad. “It’s really beautiful!”

After scribbling for a few more times and coloring certain parts of the drawing, he showed it to his mother. “Here, mom. Take a look!”

It was a rough drawing of the lake next to them: wide and blue with a flock of ducks swimming to the east of the lake. Light blue sky with cumulus clouds, and a small grassy area that meets the lake. A singular piece of white flower with oblong leaves stood above it.

“You draw very well, Jeremy!” She says, impressed. While his drawing isn’t necessarily good, for a kid his age, it looks advanced. “You’ve really improved since last month.”

Jeremy holds out a white flower to his mother, covering the sketchpad she’s looking at. “Look mom, a beautiful flower. This is for you!”

She takes the flower from his hand. “It’s beautiful! But you shouldn’t just go picking flowers that you see, sweetie. Especially this one. Looks like it’s the only one.”

Jeremy looks down and pouts. “I’m sorry, mom.”

She smiles and kisses his forehead. “It’s okay, sweetie. Don’t do that again, okay?”

Jeremy’s pout fades, and he smiles. He nods. “Yes, mom.”

She puts the flower in her ear. “Does it look pretty?”

“Yes!” The kid exclaimed. “The white flower complements your white dress.”

“Well, look at my little fashionista!” She laughs.

The mother got up and brushed off any dirt and grass blades that had gotten onto her dress. “We should go now. Your uncle is probably waiting for us back at the observation deck.”

  Jeremy nods. “Okay!”

She held his hand and walked away from the lake. As they walk, Jeremy proceeds to tell his mother about what he’ll draw next. A bunny mascot from the amusement park they went into? The old clock tower from the elementary school they visited? Or an artifact from a small historical museum that they saw? For Jeremy, it doesn’t matter. What matters to him is that he is enjoying his vacation with his mother and his uncle.
