Chapter 3 – A Ferocious Beast

Rikou decided to go to the place that Karasu had pointed out on his GPS, presumably his hut. He had in fact not lied about a hut being there, which reassured Rikou.

23 hours had passed, and Rikou had yet to find a second coconut. He did not know of the other team’s standings, but he could understand that he was in a quite unfavorable position.

Along the way from the eastern part of the island to the west, he hadn’t found any coconuts. Maybe this was simply his misfortune, but Rikou would never rely on merely luck.

One would think that since he hadn’t found much in the eastern, southern and part of the western regions of the island, he should go north. But Rikou was not like this. There had to be another way. He took a step back and tried to imagine the island from a bird’s perspective. If he had to hide coconuts on this vast island, how would he do it?

He spent quite a long time thinking whilst wandering around the hut, trying to look in unusual places for coconuts. This search wasn’t fruitful, but it could give him some insight. Rikou was going through every single step he took on this island, looking at it as if he was an eagle in his mind.

He hadn’t found a single coconut on the way to the center, nor when searching for a hut. Then, he ventured deeply southeast and managed to find one coconut. It was close to the shore, but right when he wanted to continue his search, he had gotten interrupted by Hana.

Could there have been more coconuts in that place? He kept it in mind and continued going through what had happened. He found Hana’s hut, went to the center of the island, met Karasu and then went to his hut.

All the way from the east to the west, no coconuts could be seen. From this, he could imagine that not many would be located near the center, but rather they might be placed all around the shore of the island.

Just as Rikou wanted to move closer to the western edge of the island, the GPS function of his wristband opened up automatically, with two red lights flashing onto two spots on the island.

One was near the northeast corner of the island, while the other was near the southwest shore. Rikou’s eyes flashed, this appeared to be a hint!

Exactly 24 hours after the start of the trial, it seemed that people would get hints about the location of coconuts.

Rikou could never make it in time for the coconut located northeast, thus he chose to run south from his current location. It wasn’t that far away; he calculated that it’d be less than an hour away from him. He sped up, hoping that he’d be the first to arrive.

Tenkai might also be there, which wasn’t a worry, since they were in the same team. But logically, since Karasu changed his mind from going north and met Rikou, it means that Hakaku would be located southwest.

They teamed up to split coconuts, but now that everyone knew the location of this one, they’d get in a huge fight over the ownership rights of this coconut.

Although Rikou wasn’t exceptionally fast, he had a great amount of endurance. He managed to arrive at the spot; he was once more at the shore of the island. Just then, he noticed two female figures.

Hana was standing near a spherical brown object, her elegant blonde hair standing out, and was about to pick it up. Just then, Hakaku smashed her shoulder into Hana. Even if her body seemed frail, she still had enough force to push Hana off-balance.

Hakaku quickly took the coconut in her arm and ran back into the forest, not looking back for even a moment. “You bitch!” Hana screamed, her hair now tangled and damp from sand and water, as Hakaku ran away.

Rikou saw all of this happen and instead of intercepting her on her escape path, he quickly decided to quietly follow her. After all, it would be dangerous if everyone knew that he was in possession of the coconut. It’d be best if he could quietly steal it from her.

Hana’s pupils dilated after seeing Hakaku run away and quickly ran after her. “I found it first! Give it back to me! I own it! It’s mine!” Hana shouted, but seeing that words had no effect on Hakaku, she stopped wasting her energy on yelling and focused on chasing Hakaku.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Rikou was also following Hakaku from the sidelines. Naturally, as a guy he would be faster than most girls, but due to Hakaku’s low body weight, she was as light as a feather and as fast as a leopard.

Hana could barely keep up with the speed, while Rikou made sure that no one saw him as he ran. His silver hair was flowing with the wind while he wondered where Tenkai was. Maybe he had already managed to reach the northeastern coconut?

He was extremely glad that Hana and Hakaku were busy, thus they most likely didn’t notice him as they fought over the coconut. To be honest, the sight shocked him quite a bit, as he expected them to be more diplomatic.

He took a look at his GPS whilst chasing Hakaku and noticed that both red lights had disappeared. Once a person picked up a coconut, the red lights would disperse. Just as he was busy looking at his GPS, it seemed that Hana was already out of breath.

She fell down on the ground, growling in anger and smashing her fist onto the floor. Her previously elegant blonde hair turned into a mess; her sky-blue eyes seemed to be darker than ever, resembling the deep ocean.

Rikou couldn’t bother to help her up, after all, he was busy following Hakaku. Naturally, Hakaku slowed down a bit after seeing that Hana couldn’t chase her anymore and started jogging instead. She had to preserve as much energy as possible for whatever situations may pop up.

Rikou noticed this and sighed internally in relief. He no longer had to keep that pace up and followed after her quietly. This time, instead of running with whatever he had, he had to focus on being as quiet as possible.

Hakaku felt reconciled, but her heart was still beating loudly. She was hit by a stroke of luck. She had somehow managed to push Hana off-balance and steal the coconut from her. Being able to come at the perfect moment was merely luck, but that was no reason to call her out. Luck was also a great part of this trial.

Rikou followed Hakaku, making sure that he avoided walking into any bushes and took silent steps. At one point, she stopped and rested her arms on her knees. Her seemingly fragile body was pushed to its limits as she loudly breathed out.

This would’ve been the perfect moment to strike, but he did not. He did not want a single person to know that he was going to take over this coconut and thus simply waited.

The sun was already disappearing into the horizon. It was getting late. Hakaku’s left arm was completely numb, since she was carrying the coconut throughout the entire chase. If she had stopped midway to put it in her backpack, she definitely would’ve gotten caught.

Now she finally had time to relax, so she put the coconut inside her backpack. She looked at her GPS and then walked a short distance. She stood before a hut and looked at her surroundings before entering it. Rikou was, of course, following her movements.

However, once she entered the hut, Rikou remained outside, thinking about the current situation. He could be considered to be even luckier than Hakaku, being able to come in with such impeccable timing.

Just as he was trying to get a better view of the hut, he stepped on a stick. His eyes widened in surprise; only then did he notice the sticks all around the hut.

He quickly stepped back behind a nearby tree. If he got caught now, then all of this would’ve been in vain.

Hakaku stepped out of the house with a grim expression, cautiously looking in the direction of the sound. The thought of someone chasing her must’ve come to mind.

Her eyes were filled with wrath. “Who’s there? I won’t harm you. I’ll even team up with you.” Her hands seemed to be tightly gripping something behind her back. This was most definitely a weapon, that much was clear.

Of course, Rikou would never expose himself in this situation. He felt an ominous presence radiating from her. It was as if the moment he stepped out of his hiding spot, he would get attacked by a ferocious tiger!

This dreadful sense of being watched - being unable to make a single move - he felt completely surrounded, even though it was just one fragile girl.

Hakaku took the responding silence as a refusal and sighed internally. “Well, I guess it was nothing more than an animal wandering around.” She took a sharp turn as she went back inside the hut, her lavender hair flowing with her movements.

However, he felt that if he stepped out of his hiding spot, he would not leave unscathed. Additionally, letting her know of his identity would be the greatest problem. Thus, he waited till she went back in the hut, and some more. Only after a full hour did he finally decide to peek out, looking at his surroundings.

It seemed that the hut was covered with sticks all around. He didn’t notice that at all when he first came here. Luckily for him, it was night by now, so it would be unfavorable for her to chase after him in these conditions.

Even if that was the case, this was nothing more than a stalemate. Rikou was sure that she would stay up all night, waiting for someone to break in. Maybe she even set up a trap, a mechanism to brutally murder him the moment he stepped in the hut. Charging in was not worth the risk, he couldn’t do anything but wait, and that wasn’t productive either.

Glancing at the GPS on his wristband, Rikou laughed inwardly. “I see.” he whispered and finally understood the situation. The regret he felt from not being able to steal the coconut was instantly replaced with a smile.

He did not overindulge himself in such materialistic needs, as there were still 44 hours left. Instead of waiting for an opportunity, which may not arise at all, he decided to walk away. He was confident that he could use the information from this encounter in the future.
