A Call to God and Arms

A CALL TO GOD AND ARMS

To be sung ere the breach, and after the dead are named.

  Verse I

Steel before shame, and fire before flight,

Let not the coward see morning nor night.

Bless’d be the breast where the bullet shall rest,

And hallow’d the blade that is broken in jest.

  Chorus

We who guard the breach do not kneel, do not yield!

We are stone, we are flame, we are sword in the field.

Glory in ruin, and God in the smoke—

We breathe not but His wrath, and in it we spoke.

  Verse II

If the line faileth, let none sound retreat,

But strike ‘til the marrow lies spilled at thy feet.

For what is the flesh but the coin of the soul?

And what is the grave but the Keeper’s toll?

  Chorus

We who guard the breach do not kneel, do not yield!

We are stone, we are flame, we are sword in the field.

Glory in ruin, and God in the smoke—

We breathe not but His wrath, and in it we spoke.

  Final Verse

Raise high the banner, let none call thee slave,

For the righteous have no master, save He who forgave.

Strike once, and for all, ‘neath the storm and the sun—

For the war is eternal, and it shall not be done.
