Chapter 37

All in all, it was a very nice walk back to Forest Glen. When I got to the gate I checked in with the guards, paid my entry fee, which was more than the reward for the quest. I then made my way to the Adventurers Guild. I first went to turned in my job. The receptionist took the job, checked the herbs against the posting. Approved the herbs and marked the job as complete. She gave me a voucher that I could take to the cashier’s cage. It was only for a copper, but heck, it was my first Adventurer Copper, so I went to the cashier’s cage. The cashier took the voucher, chuckled under his breath and handed me a shiny copper coin. I smiled took the coin.

The two adventurers I asked about earlier were waiting next to the woman I cured earlier. She was getting ready to leave but stuck around so I could test her companions for Gushal Rot. I cast Diagnosis on the two adventurers and found neither had the magical fungal infection. That was a relief to them and to me. While I was in the sick room, I did another check for anyone that really needed my help. No one did. There were just minor cases that didn’t need my intervention.

I went and found Gorver and told the Guild master about my encounter with the assassins. I even gave him the location of the almost dead assassin; in case he wanted to save him or whatever. He didn’t say much, and I asked if there was anything else he needed. There was nothing urgent, so I took my leave and left for Covern House.

When I got to Covern house, I immediately went to my office to check my notifications. Nothing interesting except for the death notification of the assassin. But since I didn’t get any experience/essence from it, I didn’t care. I guess Gorver didn’t care to save him.

Due to my training at the Guild, my combat skills have increased quite a bit. My combat spells have been at 5 for quite a while now, and I doubt anything other than monster hunting will increase them, and I had no plans for that. So, they will probably be at 5 for quite a while. My healing spells have also increased. Mainly due to my healing store work, healing adventurers and magic research.

Speaking of magic research. I’m in the process of trying to create a spell that will allow me to heal a roomful of people at once, Area Heal with no need to touch them. Kind of like an aura of healing. It hasn’t gone great so far. I tried it this morning and nothing. I keep running into the same problems. One, it doesn’t work, and two, I don’t know enough about magic to figure out why. Guessing isn’t really working out for me. I really need to talk to another Magic Researcher. I tried to discuss with some of the guild magicians, but they all went glassy eyed when I started talking about constructs and diagrams. Not a one I talked to has Magic Sight. Adventurer mages are much more about pragmatic use than esoteric research. They all learned their spells from spell tomes. Like the one the old gnome Eldro sells. Unfortunately, there are no healing spell tomes. Because, as I have been told many times, magic healing doesn’t exist. Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings on the matter.

Since it was early afternoon, and dinner was some hours away, I brought out the lunch Chef had packed for me and ate. Boar meat and tangy cheese sandwich. It was very tasty. While I ate, I went over the diagrams I had drawn for some of my spells, including Minor Heal, Minor Life Regenerate, Close Wounds, Cleanse. The rest were still beyond me, but I kept plugging away.

I pulled out the tome for Cleanse and compared it to the diagram. Since Cleanse is the simplest tome text (3 pages) and diagram, I have been trying to relate the two with each other. The tome is magical, where the diagram is not. The diagram is clear and concise, the tome rambling and vague. The tome works; the diagram doesn’t. Somehow, I need to figure out the magic of the tome and translate it to the diagram. It’s like being in a pitch-black room and told to write a letter to your boss, but you have to put the pen down and pick it back up after writing one word. You know it’s possible but actually doing it is next to impossible.

I believe the magic is what actually teaches the spell, not the writing in the tome. Unfortunately, there are no tomes for the other spells I have diagrams for, since they are healing spells. Maybe I should try to find another utility spell that I could create a diagram off of. It would have to be a simple spell, like Cleanse. Maybe that old gnome will have a tome I can buy, or at least a suggestion for a simple spell.

I spent the next three days in the Healing store or going to a noble’s house. The noble houses were much more lucrative. But the gratifying work was curing the average craftsman. Apparently, lots of apprentices make lots of mistakes. Healing them so they can continue is very heartwarming.

I should check with Fabia to see when I can have an afternoon off.

Discord, if you have any questions.
