The crowd at Ashglass’s plaza had thickened since they last passed through. Players clustered in hoards around the noticeboard, vendors shouted last-minute deals, and the air felt tight, like the world itself was holding a breath.
[Main Questline: Collapse of Day: Deliver Unseelie Heart Shard to Ashglass Outpost Command]
They pushed through the plaza toward the command tent near the north wall. NPC soldiers in armor moved in purposeful lines. A half-circle of players waited at the entrance, but the guard flagged Kaiden’s party through the moment his HUD updated.
[Priority Flag: Heart Shard Carrier | Access Granted]
Inside, a broad table dominated the space, maps layered on top of each other like overlapping wounds. The Outpost commander; an older woman with silver-streaked hair and scarred knuckles, looked up as they approached.
Kaiden pulled the Unseelie Heart Shard from his inventory. The crystal hovered above his palm, pulsing with a familiar rhythm.
[Quest Turn-In: Collapse of DayTemple Sample]
The commander’s eyes narrowed as she inspected the shard. “Same signature as the readings we’ve been getting from the wilds. Stronger, even.”
[Next Directive: Investigate deeper anomalies, Region Pending]
“Region pending,” Naō read. “That always sounds like they’re stalling.”
“They are,” the commander said flatly. “Higher-ups are still arguing about where to send you. In the meantime….” She jabbed a thumb toward the north wall. “We’ve got a more immediate problem.”
As if on cue, a distant boom rumbled the ground.
[Event: Outpost Siege – Ashglass]
Objective: Hold the North Gate for 10:00
Defense Rating: 37% (Critical)
Reward Scaling: Contribution-Based
The commander shoved a sigil across the table, an etched disc bearing the Ashglass crest. “Slot in at the north gate. You three don’t let them through, and maybe this place lives another day.”
“Copy that,” Ironstride said.
They stepped back out into the open air. The plaza had players at the northern side of the Outpost, weapons drawn, mounts at the checkpoint.
Two new pings rang in their HUDs.
[Faction Alignment: Unseelie – Minor Favor]
[Seelie Favor: Reduced (Certain vendors and routes locked)]
They passed through a reinforced archway and out onto the north wall. The world beyond had shifted. The trees outside Ashglass seemed taller, darker, their branches knitted together into a jagged silhouette. A pale, sick glow bled from the forest floor like someone had poured light into the roots upside down.
[Event Zone: Ashglass North Gate]
[Party Assigned: Lane C – Inner Rampart]
Ironstride adjusted the straps of her shield. “This is us. Lane C. We hold here.”
“You say that like you’ve done this before,” Naō said.
She didn’t look back at him. “Holding lines is pretty much my thing.”
Kaiden flicked his scythe into existence. The double-bladed weapon spun once, water-shadow flickering along its edges before settling.
A horn sounded, deep, metallic, somewhere in the forest. The first wave emerged.
Creeping mats of moss uncoiled and rose into hunched shapes: plant creatures with low, dragging bodies and spore-pocked backs, each step leaving behind slick, shimmering residue.
[Wave 1 Incoming: Creeping Pollenmire x8]
Traits: Spore Cloud / Ground Corrosion
Hazard: Ambient Spore Drift – LP -1% per 10s (Stacking)
Behind them slithered Rootlash Vines enemies that began burrowing under the soil, their positions marked only by faint ridges and the occasional bulge.
“Spore tanks and burrowers,” Naō said. “Because of course.”
“Triage?” Kaiden asked.
“I’ll strip their DEF and clear clouds where I can,” Naō replied. “You watch your HP. No solo martyr runs.”
“Can’t make promises,” Kaiden said.
Ironstride slammed her shield edge-first into the stone at their feet.

“They come up this ramp,” she said. “They go through me first. That’s the rule.”
The Pollenmires reached range and exhaled. Pale green clouds poured from vents in their backs, rolling over the field. Kaiden’s HUD flashed.

“Naō,” he warned.
“Already on it.” Naō snapped a vial forward.
Mistbreaker Draught II

The blue mist cut through the green, shredding it. Numbers ticked off Kaiden’s debuff bar. He dashed forward to meet the first Pollenmire, scythe arcing in a clean crescent.

The creature shrieked and recoiled, only to be flattened by Ironstride smashing down from the side.

The second Pollenmire tried to ooze past them, going for the choke point where the lane narrowed. Ironstride stepped in its path, shield angled.
“Not happening,” she said, taking the hit on the face of the shield.

[Block Successful]
Kaiden’s gaze flicked to the ground. The Rootlash movement had shifted. An underground root travelled fast beneath the stone, aimed directly at the gate behind them.
“There!” he shouted, pointing. “Burrower route.”
Naō hurled a Corrosive Draught ahead of the line.
[Corrosive Draught – Ground Saturated]

Shadow petals burst along the length of the vine, shredding tissue. The Rootlash thrashed once and collapsed into a limp coil.

The rest of the wave folded quickly. With Naō managing crowds and Ironstride keeping everything at bay with her shield, Kaiden carved through the Pollenmires in a series of clean, swift motions.

“Not bad for an opening act,” Naō said.
Ironstride didn’t relax. Her eyes stayed on the treeline. “They always send trash first. Wait for the real hit.”

The ground trembled. A distant cracking sound carried from the forest—a tree falling, or something bigger than a tree pushing its way through.
[Wave 2 Incoming]
Sunburrow Mauler x3
Glarebloom Screamer x2
Cell Count: 8
Massive shapes came into view. The Maulers were hulking lumps of bark and stone, trunk-like limbs ending in spade-shaped claws. Their shoulders glowed with buried sunstones, light seeping out in molten streaks. The Screamers floated behind them like grotesque lilies, petals ringed in mirror-sheen, throats pulsing with light.
“Kill order?” Naō asked.
“Take the screamers,” Kaiden said. “If they buff the front line, this gets ugly.”
As if to prove his point, one Screamer opened its throat. A cone of light washed over the Maulers.

Kaiden felt the buff settle over him like a second layer of armor. The impacts from the Maulers’ shockwaves ticked for less than they should have.
[Environmental Pressure: Shock Tremor – LP -4 per hit (Mitigated)]
He darted around the nearest Mauler, feet finding shallow grooves in the stone. Its back was a mass of fused bark, but he could see where the root damage was under the surface.
“Overflow.”
The world sharpened. Water burst from beneath his boots in a spiraling ring. His cloak shredded into streams of twilight mist.

Ironstride’s jaw clenched. “Zero.”
The sky over the forest went darker. The branches parted as a massive shape moved through them, dragging trenches in its wake.
[Boss Spawn Detected]
Bulwark Thornlord (Lv. 15) [Cell Count: 10]
Traits: Siege Breaker / Line Crasher / Armor Shred
It stepped into view: a towering, walking mass of braided trunks and iron-hard thorns, a shield-like growth of bark over its front. Chains of vine dragging smashed stone and uprooted trees rattled behind it.
“I’ll take the front,” Ironstride snapped. “You just make sure to make it bleed.”
She ran ahead before either of them could argue, shield raised.

“Not if we do our job,” Kaiden said.
His Photosphere pulsed once, like it knew what he was thinking.
[Twilight Overdrive – Ready]
Condition: Overflow activation at full AP
He waited for a second, watching the Thornlord’s pattern. It swung in heavy arcs, then planted both arms in the ground to send a shockwave crawling up the ramp.
“Watch the double-plant,” he said. “That’s the opening.”
The boss dug in; Ironstride braced herself.
“Now,” Kaiden murmured.
“Overflow.”
Twilight ripped through him again, the world narrowing to a bright, fast-focus circle.

The Thornlord staggered, bark sloughing off in chunks. Ironstride took the opening. She stepped in, shield low, and slammed upward with all her weight. A wall of spectral thorns erupted in front of her, anchoring her position. Kaiden and Naō, standing just behind it, felt their HUDs surge.
[Cover: Bastion Line – Allies Behind Wall]
DEF +15% | Ranged Damage Taken -20% (8s)
“You’re not getting through this one,” she growled at the boss, even though it couldn’t hear anything but its own code.
The Thornlord crashed down with both arms, slamming into the Bastion wall instead of the gate. Damage numbers popped along the barrier but the gate behind them stayed untouched.
“Line’s holding,” Naō breathed. “Geez, Ironstride, that’s nasty.”
“Eyes on the target,” she snapped back, but there was a hint of satisfaction in it.
Kaiden could feel Overdrive’s window closing. He needed to end it or at least cripple the thing before Collapse rules came back online. He jumped, landing on a protruding root, then up again, reaching the creature’s higher torso. He slammed his scythe into the center mass.
“Drown the Sun.”
Black water erupted in a pillar, swallowing the Thornlord from the waist down. When it receded, a ghostly pool remained under its roots, churning violet.

Kaiden dropped back into the pool, breath ragged, and kept swinging. Each second, a tiny tick of LP crept back up even as he poured damage out.
The Thornlord tried to haul itself free of the slowing field. It failed.
Naō’s flasks detonated along its side. Ironstride’s shield slammed into its legs in measured, brutal rhythm. Kaiden and his copies tore into the softened bark.

“The item that I just acquired,” Ironstride added. “It’s marked as a Key item…” she paused for a half of a second.
Even Naō took pause at what was going on. “Kaiden, it’s just like your…” he looked up at Kaiden, who looked at Ironstride. No other words were spoken between the three of them.
“Let's go somewhere we can privately talk,” Kaiden suggested.
They made their way back from the north gate, the Outpost slowly resetting around them, NPCs clearing debris, players breaking into excited retellings of their part of the fight. At the edge of the plaza, Kaiden paused.
He opened the menu: his timer was running out. He cursed. Of all times, why now?
“What's wrong?” Naō asked.
“I’ve got a shift to finish,” he half sighed, half huffed under his breath.
Ironstride nodded. “Don’t get killed by paperwork.” but there was a silent conversation that ran between them, ‘we'll figure this out when you get back’.
Liri caught his sleeve, tiny fingers tightening. “You’ll come back soon, right?” she asked.
He ruffled her hair, automatic, the same way he used to with Mina.
“Yeah,” Kaiden said. “I said I’d get you home, didn’t I?”
She smiled, and the world tilted toward white.
[Log Out Confirmed]
Fluorescent light replaced the sky.
Kaiden blinked up at the hospital ceiling as the headset lifted. The hum in his chest was still there.
Around him, the VR ward hummed with low machine noise. Cam sat at the central desk, half-dozing over a monitor, a mug of something lukewarm at his elbow. A few patients were still under, fingertips twitching faintly as their own adventures played out on their screens.
Kaiden slid the visor onto its hook and rubbed a hand over his face.
One night shift down. A siege held. And what might be possibly… a new Photosphere waited to be discovered.
