Prologue

  "Kar.....a"

Collapsed on the floor I watched as his chest crumpled in on itself, the ribs finally brittle enough to give under their own weight.

He was dead. And quicker than my heart could beat, his corpse was rotting away into nothing.

Worse, I had done this. I didn’t know how I had done this, but there was no way to deny that it had been me.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

My throat was sore from screaming, my body slick with sweat and sore with the efforts that had come before, and voices were at the door, accompanied by the occasional pounding and pleas to be let in.

This was a nightmare, one I couldn’t wake up from. I had killed him. Murdered him somehow. In some way that I didn’t understand. Couldn’t begin to comprehend. Any moment the innkeep would arrive with the spare key or the door would give way under the pounding and they’d find me naked on the floor holding a grisly souvenir of whatever it was that had happened. My life, as I knew it, would be over.

And I was just stuck there, unable to move. Frozen. Numbly Watching. Wishing I had never died.
