Chapter 57 - The Seal That Refused Her

The forest dimmed after Liora's death.

  Not from loss of light.

  From loss of presence.

Ayla felt the emptiness like a wound carved into the world—raw, silent, endless.

Her mother's hand lay limp in her lap.

  Her breath was gone.

But the warmth on Ayla's palms...

  that lingered too long.

Ren knelt beside her, sobbing into her sleeve.

Lami clung to Ren, crying quietly.

Eris rested a steadying hand on Ayla's back—barely touching, as if afraid Ayla might break from too much pressure.

Cael stood just behind them, silent, protective, jaw locked in grief.

The masked man leaned on his cracked staff—wounded, but watching Ayla far too intently.

  He whispered,

"She rejected the Seal. It was her final defiance."

  Ayla's head lifted slowly.

  Her voice scraped out.

  "No...

  she rejected me."

  Ren gasped.

  "No, Ayla—NO—she didn't—"

Ayla's tears fell onto the earth.

  "Yes, she did."

The wind around her tightened painfully, as if the air itself disagreed.

  Eris gripped her shoulder.

  "Ayla. That isn't true."

Cael knelt beside her—a rare break in his guarded posture—and touched her arm gently.

"She pushed the Seal away to protect you."

Alya stared at her trembling hands.

  "But she still died."

Ren slammed her fist against the ground.

  "That's not your fault!"

The masked man chuckled weakly, blood dripping down his chin.

"She died because she feared what you would become."

  Ayla rose to her feet.

  Something in her expression shifted.

  Something hard.

  Something dangerous.

Eris stepped back slightly—not from fear, but from understanding.

"Don't listen to him," Cael warned.

But the masked man took a staggering step forward.

"You felt it, didn't you? The power in your bones. The ambition buried inside you. The storm waiting behind your ribs."

Alya clenched her fists, air crackling around her fingers.

  Ren shrieked,

"STOP PROVOKING HER OR I WILL SHOVE THAT STICK UP YOUR—"

  Eris covered her mouth.

  "REN. Not now."

The masked man pointed toward the treeline—

where the Fifth Seal had vanished like a fleeing star.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

  "You want it.

Whether you admit it or not."

  Ayla's breath hitched.

  She whispered,

  "No."

  But her hand trembled.

And the masked man saw it.

He smiled under the cracked mask.

  "You will chase it.

  You must."

  "No."

  "You cannot deny destiny."

Ayla's voice snapped like a whip.

  "I CAN."

  The forest wind surged outward—

  forcing the masked man back.

  Forcing Cael to shield Lami.

Forcing Ren to cling to the roots beside her.

Forcing Eris to hold her ground with a shield of air.

  The masked man braced himself.

  "You can't."

Then he ripped off his cracked mask.

  Everyone froze.

  Ren whispered, horrified,

"Oh gods. No. NO. This is bad—this is VERY BAD—"

  Lami covered her mouth.

  Eris cursed.

  Cael's eyes widened.

  Ayla stared.

His face was scarred—deep lines like old fire or lightning.

His eyes glowed in flickering colors—

each one an element shifting beneath the iris.

  Eris whispered sharply:

  "He's a Fivefold Carrier."

  Ren screamed,

"ANOTHER ONE?! HOW MANY DOES THIS STORY NEED—"

But Cael shook his head, grim.

  "No. Look at his eyes.

  His power is corrupt."

Ayla felt the air twist around her.

  The man nodded.

  "Correct."

And then he said the sentence that made the forest fall silent:

"I am what happens to a Seal bearer...

  who loses control."

  Alya's breath stopped.

  Ren whispered,

  "...he's a failed host."

  Eris clenched her fists.

"This is what the Order is hiding."

  Cael's voice was low.

"This is what the Academy is afraid of."

  Lami trembled.

"This is what your mother tried to prevent..."

Alya stared at him, heart pounding with grief and horror.

  "What happened to you?"

  He smiled with cracked lips.

"I accepted all five Seals... before I was ready."

  Alya felt her knees weaken.

He stepped forward—barely able to stand, but still radiating power.

  "You cannot wield all five.

  No one can.

  Not without destroying themselves.

  Not without destroying the world."

  Alya whispered,

"Then why do you want me to take them?"

  He laughed softly.

  "Because you can."

  Eris snapped,

  "She won't!"

Ren threw a stick at him.

"STOP TRYING TO MAKE HER DESTROY THE WORLD—SHE HAS OTHER HOBBIES!"

But the man shook his head.

"She has the control her mother lacked.

The discipline her predecessors failed to learn.

The power to unite the Seals without unraveling."

  Alya took a step backward.

  "Stop."

  "You were born for this."

  "Stop."

  "You are the Convergence."

  "STOP—!"

  The forest exploded.

  Branches shot outward.

  Vines ripped from the earth.

  Wind roared.

Leaves swirled upward in a vortex.

  Ayla's grief fractured her control.

  Roots snapped trees in half.

  Air pressure warped the air.

  The ground trembled.

  Eris shielded Lami.

  Cael shielded all of them.

Ren clung to Cael's back, screaming,

"AYLA, STOP HAVING A BREAKDOWN WITH WEATHER MAGIC—"

  The masked man didn't move.

  He braced himself, smiling.

"Yes. Yes. Break. Break open. Let it out—"

Ayla appeared in front of him.

  Teleporting again.

  Eyes glowing.

  Tears falling.

Wind screaming like a grieving beast.

  Her voice cracked.

  "If I'm the Convergence...

why did she run from me?"

  The masked man whispered,

  "Because she feared you."

  Wind shattered.

  Ayla punched him.

  Not with fists.

  With four elements at once.

  He flew across the clearing—

hitting a massive root that cracked under the force.

  He didn't move.

  Silence followed.

  A tree fell.

  Birds fled.

  The wind whimpered.

Ayla collapsed to her knees, trembling.

  Ren scrambled toward her.

  "Ayla! AYLA—hey—hey—it's okay—come here—"

She wrapped her arms around her tightly.

Eris knelt on her other side, steady and protective.

Cael placed a hand on her back.

  Lami sobbed quietly.

Ayla buried her face in Ren's shoulder.

Her voice was barely a breath.

  "I'm scared."

  Ren squeezed tighter.

  "Good.

  That means you're still you."

  Ayla sobbed.

  Ren whispered fiercely:

"You don't have to chase the Fifth Seal tonight.

You don't have to do anything tonight.

  We'll bury your mother.

  We'll sit with you.

  We'll breathe.

  You won't be alone.

  Ever again."

Ayla broke into quiet, shaking tears.

Cael pressed a hand against her arm.

  "We'll protect you."

  Eris placed hers over his.

  "And you'll protect us."

  Lami took her hand gently.

  "Together."

  Ayla's breathing steadied—barely.

  But steady.

The masked man coughed weakly from across the clearing.

  Ayla stiffened.

  Cael rose immediately.

  Eris stood with him.

Ren positioned herself in front of Lami.

The man spoke with blood on his lips:

  "The Fifth Seal... is moving.

You have... hours at most... before it chooses."

  Ayla wiped her eyes.

  Her voice grew quiet.

  Cold.

  Determined.

"I'm not letting it choose wrong."

  Ren groaned,

"And here we go with the scary tone again—"

  Ayla stood fully.

  Her grief didn't disappear.

  It hardened.

  The wind bent to her.

  The roots stilled.

  The forest bowed.

  Ayla whispered,

  "I'm finding it."

  Cael nodded.

  Eris nodded.

  Ren threw her hands up.

  "Fine! But we're ALL going!"

  Lami nodded tearfully.

  "You're our family."

  Ayla nodded once.

Then she looked toward the dark forest—

toward destiny, danger, and the final Seal.

  And stepped forward.
