Chapter 1.5: I Live in the Thicket Over There (Pt. 1)

For a few excruciatingly long seconds, I felt nothing. Absolutely nothing. I couldn’t feel anything, hear anything, smell anything, see anything, taste anything.

  Then it started.

Pain flared up all across my body, except it wasn’t my body anymore. I think the best way to describe it was a formless mass of cosmic string, all tangled together, and yet actively reforming into something new, something comprehensible. Every single one of my senses, even ones I didn’t know I had, were being assaulted in every single way possible. I was burning and freezing and being crushed and ripped apart all at the same time.

  Then, it stopped.

  It just…

  Stopped. Right then and there.

My eyes shot open, fully expecting to be in a hospital bed, hooked up to a hundred machines keeping me alive.

  But I wasn’t.

  Not even close.
