Chapter II: Grief

A child was born in the heavens; an angel blessed with all truths of the known universe in which he lived. Those truths were said to be held within his eyes; rare eyes, deemed capable of seeing vast distances, eyes, that held truths of all that exists.

His name was Beatus, and his blessing was that of the eyes of Truth. Not a single soul in the heavens could hide from the eyes, they saw all virtue and iniquity of every god to have ever walked the heavens. All who dwelled in his presence, feared him; Beatus, was untouchable.

One day: Beatus fell in love with one of the angels; Her beauty made Aphrodite look like a common housewife, and he loved her so. Beatus took so much pride in the power of his eyes, so and so, that he couldn't fathom a reality in which he got rejected; he was the golden boy after all, feared by many, for the truths he held.

Despite having all this in mind; Beatus still had to muster up the courage to propose to her and once he finally did; he got rejected, claiming that her heart already belonged to someone else.

Beatus, was heartbroken; he couldn't believe the reality he was presented with and the very power he took great pride in; a power that he himself did not fully understand, began working against him.

The eyes of Truth worked in accordance to the user's thoughts and feelings, it was, in a sense; a pure reflection of the user's heart.

In the hands of someone pure hearted; the eyes held many truths, and had the vast knowledge of the entire universe at hand, readily available to the user's disposal, but in the hands of one tainted; deception and chaos arises, and the user is granted the ability to cast powerful illusions; illusions, which cannot be broken, even if discovered, and eternal cosmic flames, suitable for burning that, which the user did not see fit.

The cosmic flames of the inverted phoenix, shall wreak havoc to all, who oppose the eyes of deceit.

Only those in possession of the eyes of truth can extinguish the flames, and break free of the illusions. Unfortunately for Beatus, unaware of his own capabilities; fell down a rabbit hole full of lies and deceit.

Beatus couldn't come to terms with the reality he faced, and soon; the once bright lime green on the inside of his eyes, turned dark, and shrouded the darkness that had now found its way into his heart. The eyes of deceit, had fully manifested.

Beatus sat down, imagining all the things that he and Seraphina could've done together; the laughs they could've shared, the meals they could've had, and the small moments that could've made life, all the more worthwhile.

Desperate for a life with Seraphina: Beatus soon realized, that the life he yearned; wasn't so far-fetched and that all he had to do, was take it.

When the time came, Beatus murdered Seraphina's lover in cold blood, and covered it up.

Now in high spirits, and in an escalated state of euphoria: Beatus searched for the love of his life in order to give her the bad news, but as soon as he arrived to her supposed location, his face turned sour; before Beatus' eyes, was the same angel he just killed.

Now in a state of panic; Beatus took multiple steps back, falling to his back. "Wha- What is this? What's the meaning of this!" Beatus exclaimed, as fear and terror soon turned into anger.

The rest of the surrounding angels slowly approached, asking him what the matter was, but to each face that he turned to, saw the same angel he killed, over.

  "What's the matter?"

  and over

"Did the golden boy get his hands dirty?"

  and over

"She's never going to forgive you,"

  And over again

"We! shall never, forgive you!" All angels spoke in unison.

Beatus had it, with anger finally taking full control; lashed out, and burned each, and every single angel in sight that surrounded him.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Unbeknownst to Beatus; the eyes of deception he had now acquired, continued to deceive him further. The illusions that the eyes held were so powerful, not even the user was exempt from falling victim to them.

Now standing in the aftermath of his own destruction: Beatus slowly plunged into a state of sorrow and despair, as he watched the burning corpse of his beloved Seraphina, slowly turn, into a crisp.

Petrified, Beatus fell to his knees, "Why!" he let out a prolonged shout, as everything in his world, seemed to crumble right before his eyes; tricked, deceived, lied to, and by no one else, but himself.

When the rest of the angels arrived, they found Beatus hugging the burnt corpse of Seraphina on his knees. The angels that attempted to take Beatus in, were only met by his wrath; one by one, each angel got burned by the eternal cosmic flames, of the inverted bird.

Two gods were able to restrain Beatus, and brought him before the universal council of gods. Fuming, the council was anything but happy; he, who had once walked in truth, and had been the bearer of good will, now basked in the shadows of lies and deceit.

Beatus let his emotions take control of him, and had therefore lost the ability to control the power he was blessed with; what conceivable punishment awaited such a figure? For even the gods themselves, never understood the power with which he was blessed.

The eyes were a rare phenomenon; unique, even amongst the gods, but even they could tell, that the power was different from what it once was.

It was more ominous, and their appearance gave it away, if it hadn't been obvious already.

Only a scholar of chaos: a student of the grand priestess herself, knew how to contain the power of the eyes; thankfully for the gods, they had one at their disposal. By unanimous decision, the gods would set forth their punishment.

Beatus: was to be banished, to live amongst men; only to return, once the god's set conditions were met.

The eyes were set to appear once every millennium, in the skulls of two separate human children. The eyes were only to manifest, given a decade of peace before the end of the millennium. Failure to keep the peace, would mean that Beatus; would have to wait, yet another millennium.

Beatus was only to return to the realm of the gods once he secured the eyes, and got their power under control, failure to adhere to this, would see Beatus condemned to the realm of man for all eternity.

Beatus had no say in it, the gods demands were already set in stone. Beatus would have his eyes ripped from his skull, and exiled to walk among men.

Devastated, Beatus would offer little to no resistance in the process of doing so, because he too, knew that the power would be better off in someone else's hands.

The gods weren't too unforgiving, as they wouldn't leave Beatus without sight, henceforth providing him with eyes of his own.

A show of good will; although many rumored, that the gods wanted to provide Beatus with something he could use to mourn with.

Falling towards earth like an asteroid in atmospheric entry; Beatus crashed onto a mountain, where he spent the rest of his days, weeping and sulking.

It took a long while for Beatus to come out of hiding, about a quarter towards the end of millennia passed before he decided to restore peace and order to mankind; if he ever hopped to reclaim his prized possessions, and return to his seat of power amongst the gods, he had no other choice.

It was only after Beatus had climbed the social ladder, and became the sole emperor of Rome in forty BC, that he began to fall in love once again.

It seemed almost treacherous to Beatus, but the woman bore a striking resemblance to his beloved Seraphina.

Memories from a distant past began racing through Beatus' mind, memories of a past where he reminisced about a life with Seraphina in his arms; the woman he saw now, placed those memories well within arm's reach, and all he had to do, was take it.

Claiming her as a wife wasn't so easy, as Beatus faced the same dilemma that had seen him cast out of heaven centuries ago; the peasant woman, already had her eyes, set for someone else. The lustrous gold and luxury that Beatus constantly presented to her, was simply not enough to sway her.

Beatus got infuriated, and grew evermore frustrated. Instead of killing the man: Beatus had him chained, and tortured in a dungeon for as long as he lived.

Now, with the love of her life out of the way; little could be done to stop Beatus from taking her as his bride, and although the woman's heart still longed for the man; she would eventually be forced, to succumb to Beatus' will.

Together, Beatus and Ariel would have three children; two sons and one daughter.

Beatus named his daughter after the goddess Euthenia and his other son, Hephaestus. Ariel would be given the honour of naming the last born, and called him Scien.

The three children unknowingly inherited an energy unknown to man; the gift of mana, and when the two sons came of age, Beatus instructed them to travel the world, in order to maintain peace; as for his daughter Euthenia, she remained within the royal households.

Among the three, Euthenia had the largest mana reserves, and the people descended from her, were known as Euthenians; characterized by their blond hair and blue eyes, and the wings they bore after achieving their height of power, made them resemble the gods from whence they came.

Scien was the most curious of the three, and headed west once he came of age, settling down in the Americas.

Scien played around with his gift of mana at an early age; coming up with all sorts of spells and incantations, defining what true sorcery was. The people descended from him were known as Sciens, and carried on his diverse forms of sorcery.

Hephaestus took after the god himself, and used his magic to create great weapons imbued with powerful magic; weapons that put mankind on par with the gods themselves, and the people who took after him were known as Hephaestuns.
