The wind whistled an eerie song through the rustling tendrilled fingers of the trees surrounding the ghostly still lake. A cacophony of voices whispered in the dull light of the shadowed, haunted sun. A figure prowled the edges of the in between, where the pale light didn't reach and the shadows reigned. They weren't fully of this world nor of the next but some might say they were from the thin black line separating both worlds. Limbo. If Limbo could be even described as that. A plane of chaos and mayhem where the only order was disorder, where the only thing that made sense was that it didn't make sense and the only predictable thing was that it was and always would be unpredictable.
Another figure of water and woe rose from the lake to greet this person of shadows and disorder. The splash of water echoed in the near silence as the lake rippled in a rhythmic poem of woe and wonder.
"Hey Beetle!" The water creature's spoken words tinted the air with the smell of seaweed and salty water. "What's up?"
"Soulsong sent me here for a new oddity and I was hoping you'd help me search?" The creature of shadows left the darkness of the trees, stalking closer to the lake and the creature that stood within the icy water.
"Yeah sure! Any idea what we'll find?" Their words rippled like currents through the air. The wind whistled a dreadful song of sadness and despair threatening to bring doom and destruction that nothing short of mystical could stop.
The creature of shadows tilted their head up to listen to its haunting melody, "Soulsong just said it's small and round, which isn't too helpful, but I guess we can use the new magic detector I got from our trip to Abyssal the other day."
They pulled a ovular device radiating with the energy of the darkest corners of the Abyss and the evil sowed within out of their pocket, and with a tap it transformed into a sinister shape.
"Huh that's interesting, it can look like a magnifying glass? That's so useful." The water demon peered in close to the evil contraption before they straightened up again as the shadow demon replied.
"Yeah, credit to Mika for finding that out, I was tinkering with it when they tried to eat it and I grabbed it off them just in time before it was lost forever to the depths of their stomac- uh anyway yeah, I accidentally pressed the button in the process and it transformed." The shadow person fiddled with the evil thing for a moment before they lifted it up to peer through it. "Let's go find some wonders!"
They looked around, the object in front of their eye as they searched in the water, sand and darkness of the trees for a mystery that might never be found.
"Oh there's something magic over there!" The shadow creature pointed towards the bushes hiding an orb of great, unmatched power.
The shadow thing grew closer to the orb, the watery being trailing behind as they advanced toward the bushes and the otherworldly orb hidden within the innocuous leaves.
The two figures coalesced, blocking the sun as they leaned into the darkness of the trees and picked up the powerful and mysterious orb of brilliance.
"The magic seems to be coming from here but it must be broken, this is just a shiny pebble?" The mystical orb pulsed in dazzling light, splintering the darkness and shattering the world as the figure of shadows held it in their mortal hand. "It's glowing, that's so cool!"
"Maybe it's a luminous stone or a funky lightbulb?" The figure of sea and sadness spoke their voice echoing through the haunting trees as the orb outshone the rest of the world in its superiority, not that mortals could fathom its true worth that far outweighed the dull pale light of the world they resided in, so oblivious to the beauty of the world of divinity this orb belonged to. "Or it's just a bit shiny from water."
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
"It's a pretty pebble but definitely not magical." The orb glowed fiercely in defiance, mortals could never understand its dark and powerful worth so it was no surprise that this skeptical and whimsy mortal couldn't comprehend the truth.
"Hmm yeah I see what you mean, it is a bit dull, I've seen many a sea pebble prettier." The orb glowed darkly with anger and disdain as the weak little water mortal peered at it with their dirty, impure eyes. These mortals would feel the pure wrath and power of this orb.
Then a little, evil blob of many treacherous eyes and a slightly woody tone appeared from within the shadow creature's bag as it morphed into a strange chest and landed in front of the divine orb. A beastly monster but one that would be easily defeated by this orb of immense and breathtaking power so unseen and unknown by mortals.
It sat in front of the orb, slightly bigger than it, before a pink tendril reached out from the depths of the light brown chest thing, surrounding the orb. This beastly creature had overcome the orb in a moment but the mysterious, mystical orb wouldn't be defeated so easily, too powerful to ever be destroyed. It would be a fierce fight but the answer was always predetermined.
"Shiny!" The monster growled formidable, a claim that it would win, but it wouldn't, not now, not ever.
Darkness overcame everything suddenly as the world shifted in a moment and the orb was surrounded by dull, wet black.
"Mika, spit it out! You can't eat stones!" The shadow mortal's voice barely penetrated the depths of the prison the orb was confined to, surrounded by only shadows the orb knew it would meet its end even the most powerful of things could be met at a stalemate if its opponent was fast enough. This was the end, for now, but the orb would rise again, divinity could never be defeated for long.
Mika sat proudly in front of its friends, they had claimed yet another shiny object for their vast collection.
"Shiny!" They yelped happily before climbing up the side of Beetle's trousers and arm then into her little black backpack.
"You can't just swallow every shiny thing you see Mika!" Beetle cried, grabbing Mika back out of her bag, she raised her brows and Mika squirmed.
"Hey, we might want to head back now, it's getting even darker and I'd rather not accidentally stumble into the Negative plane with the influx of nightwalkers lately." Silicon whispered, her eyes glimmering like shiny stones of sea water against her dark brown skin as Mika delighted in the shine.
"Don't you dare do whatever the hells you're thinking Mika!" Beetle glared at them, grey eyes searing into their light wood as they quivered under her gaze.
"Meep!" Mika shifted, escaping her grip and climbing up Silicon's arm to sit on her shoulder amidst her long light blue and sandy blonde dreadlocks.
"Well then, let's head back." Beetle swung her bag around on one shoulder to rummage through its depths before pulling out a glowing book.
She flicked through the pages till she reached an illustration of a shop amidst a starry sky riddled with lightning, snow, floating islands and random things adrift. She muttered a few words that Mika could never properly catch as the air in front of them rippled, tearing to reveal the scene, the now searing glow of the book illuminating Beetles dark hair woven with strands of colour and making her skin look even paler as she stepped into the window in space and time.
Silicon followed behind her as Mika leaped through the portal and onto Beetle's head between her buns as they headed inside the shop, portal closing behind them.
Mika nestled into their little bed, shop dark around them apart from the few items that glowed slightly. Beetle and Silicon had departed for their room earlier leaving Mika alone amidst the oddities hanging from hooks, sitting on shelves and on anything in between.
Alone Mika could finally add the pebble to their growing collection of oddities hidden in a crack in the wood of the walls behind their little nest of a bed. Mika spat it out along with one of Beetle's golden bracelets and another of Silicon's shiny rings, forming arms to remove the board and add them to the horde of items within.
A very nice addition to their collection, though it no longer glowed like before. Mika smiled, wood crinkling upward in a strange grin as they snuggled into the blankets, turning fully to a light brown and gold chest.
The few lights around flickering out like candlelight as the shop slowly went to sleep, the only light faint sparks of lightning far in the distance across the vast sea of Limbo.
Slowly Mika drifted off to sleep and the world of warm darkness.
