Prologue:

  Do you believe in demons?

What about ghosts? Well, if you asked me these questions, the first thing I can say, is I do. Not that I saw a real demon before, or even a ghost. But they said they’re always everywhere.

They’re just wandering, watching over people, and trying to manipulate them. I don’t think they do.

At one point, in a rationale view, those entities are just things made by other people to view at. Nothing can ever depict their true nature of existence. Not until…

“Hey, Gabe.” a familiar voice calls to me.

“Huh?” I look at the one who calls, a girl with a white, short hair, and bright crimson eyes. Her eyes locked on me. “How long will we wait? I’m getting bored now.” Her appearance, though odd, seemed to be a perfect normal girl in her 17 years.

A slender body, and ample chests for the blossoming of her youth. But what depicts to her aura is the black long scythe she’s holding. What’s even more bizarre right now is a heinous, uncanny being in a big size body lying down in the puddle of blood.

Sitting atop of the corpse, her chin rested on her palm while looking down on me.

The tone of her voice shows the boredom. “Just wait for a bit, okay? I’m sure she will arrive soon.” I answered.

I look at my wristwatch and sees the time, 3:00 AM. A familiar time I’ve used through before meeting her. The time where some people often believes, as the “Devil’s Hour”, and at that time I always wake up for an hour before falling asleep again.

From the distance, a sound of bell tolling heard. Though faint, yet hearing it can bring a nightmare for an individual. On the paved road, a fire flickered; appearing is the black cellar gate sculpted in skulls.

It opens, and from underground appears a man wearing a black tailcoat and top hat. His feature shows elegance, like a noble. Behind him is a woman wearing maid outfit. “Good day, Mr. Gabriel, and our princess here, Hecate.”

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

The man greets us with a smile, and bows down with his top hat off of his head. “Now, you did a great job finishing the task before the Devil’s Hour.”

Snapping his fingers, the woman beside him goes to the corpse and carry it with her bare hands. “I believe you’re getting used to this, huh?”

I saw this guy several times now, but whenever I see him… the uncanny feeling keeps rising inside me. His dark sclera and blue shaded pupils gazes at me with contempt and malice.

His pale skin, bathed on the full moon, gives an eerie feeling. “Mephistopheles, how long should I stay here in this plane? Should be the time I go back to Hell?”

“Oh, my… milady, just chill for a bit here more. Your father, the king himself doesn’t want to see you yet.”

The man named himself Mephistopheles, replied.

“I’m getting bored here. I can’t just play along with the mortals.” the girl, whose named Hecate, disdainfully replied.

“If I am the one who can give instructions, I would like you to back in Hell. But it’s your father’s orders. Besides, it’s your fault in the first place why you got here, right?”

His eyes sneer and shows a wide grin. Showing the saw-like teeth, the dread feeling looking at it makes me feel ick. “And the boy here… is your destined guide in the mortal plane.”

He turns to look at me, and in a snap he vanished and appears right in front of me. I got twitched from his sudden appearance. “I’m grateful you are the milady’s guide.” he begins to talk. “I can’t sense any malice, or anything from you. You’re like a hollow being, an empty vessel.”

He leaned and took a sniff of me. “I want to possess someone like you, and roam in the mortal plane to see the dysfunctional of this world.”

Through his words crawls the hideous motives that can be seen anytime soon he steps in. “But right now… I shall bid farewell to you.”

Moving a bit far away from me while his eyes still locked, his smile remains. “I’ll be going my way now, Gabriel. And princess Hecate?”

  “Yeah?”

“Do enjoy your staying here on this plane. I’ll see you all again, soon.”

On his parting words, he steps down to the cellar gate downstairs back until it vanished.

Now, should I still need to make myself believe that there are demons dwelling among us? I guess so? I do believe they’re just there to watch over us, and some of them shows their uncanny smile, readying to attack us.

“Hey, Gabe.” Hecate called to me as she grabbed my shoulder. I turn to look at her and sees the uncanny smile of hers. “You know it’s payday today, right? Will you treat me for a meal?”

“Is it today, huh?” I asked, my brows furrowed and gives a troubled smile.

“Come on, before you’re my guide… you’re my slave, right?” she replied. Right, before everything else came to this, we’re just ordinary classmates. A girl that is outstanding due to her appearance.

And her smile that made me feel sick, yet I can’t get enough of it.

“Y-yeah! I get it! I’ll just withdraw if Mephistopheles transfers the cash!” I snarked a remark. Right now, I’m just an ordinary student, and a guide for this person here… so should I say, a demon.
