The First Patrol

Wolfs submarines are 102 metres long and can carry a total of 1 captain and 10 officers (1 captain's bed and 5 officers' bunks, so that someone is on duty while someone is sleeping) There are a total of 20 crew bunks, a maximum of 60 crew members can be found, a total of 1 captain 10 officers 60 crew members = 71 people, but in order not to be too heavy, there is an average of 1 captain 4 officers 35-40 crew members. It has 6500 mAh double battery capacity and can store a maximum of 23000 litres of diesel, it can dopalise enough oxygen for 2 days under water, it travels at 32 km/h above water and 14 km/h under water, there is no aft torpedo launcher, there are 4 bow hatches in front, 4 loaded torpedoes and 8 torpedoes in the torpedo room in the torpedo bow torpedo room, there are 12 torpedoes in total. She has ballast tanks aft and forward, guaranteed and tested to withstand depths of 200 metres, she has a vacuum pump in the command room to expel water, but its performance decreases for every 10 metres she descends below 100 metres. The Wolfs ships are numbered, Wolfs submarines were numbered and named, like W-1 W-2 W-3. Our protagonist is Captain Veledinyev Ronghat, who will be the captain of the W-34, Ronghat has never been in a naval battle, only in small operations, so he is inexperienced. 4 officers were assigned to serve with him, 1 radioman Fjinev Grolman (also a doctor and formerly served on the WB-3 (the first prototypes of the wolfs submarines, only 6 were built), but he was wounded on the 6th day of his service and was treated on land, at this time the WB-3 sank to the bottom of the water in a fierce battle, this left Grolman with a great trauma, but he tries to forget the past) engineer machinist Yahhar Rolvo (Rolvo is a colourful person, He always wants to have fun, but when he is under orders he is more serious than ever), Ovlarov Avan is the other mechanic assigned for torpedo loading and maintenance (like our captain, his first mission, Avan is self-sacrificing enough to do his best for heroism, but panic attacks are now normalised for him, he gets very excited and sometimes does not obey orders), Finally, the first mate Qronov Qron (an experienced captain who had served before, completed a total of 5 patrols with the WB-1, did his best to sink 12 sunk merchant ships, but was afraid of explosions)

There are a total of 33 crew members on the submarine, 9 for engine maintenance, 3 for cleaning, 3 cooks, 6 observers, 9 for service in the command room, 3 radiomen and medics (people who will be with the radio officer), 9 for torpedo maintenance. There are 3 shifts, Day, Evening and Night shifts, while some are on duty, others sleep and others take care of their needs. W-34 submarines registered in the 5th squadron

  16.07.1934

At the break of dawn, while the final fittings of the W-34 submarine are being completed, Captain Ronghat gathers the entire crew at the port to meet them. Thirty-three crew members and four officers stand in formation, saluting the captain. After returning the salute, the captain calls the officers over to get to know them.

  Captain V. Ronghat: “Hello, gentlemen.”

First Officer Q. Qron: “Good day, Captain! I'm First Officer Qronov Qron.”

Radioman F. Grolman: “I'm Radioman Fjinev Grolman.”

Chief Engineer Y. Rolvo: “I'm Chief Engineer Yahhar Rolvo.”

Assistant Engineer O. Avan: “I'm Engineer Ovlarov Avan.”

Captain V. Ronghat: “Pleased to meet you. I'm your captain, Veledinyev Ronghat. I hope the patrols go well. The ship will be ready to receive orders in an hour. Gather the crew. It's time we get a closer look at our submarine.”

First Officer Q. Qron: “Understood, Captain!”

The entire crew lines up on the submarine deck as final supplies are loaded. The captain arrives shortly after.

Captain V. Ronghat: “All crew below deck. Let’s get underway. The more ships we sink, the better.”

The crew enters the submarine, and at the captain’s command, the diesel engines move forward at 3/4 speed. As they leave the port, everyone on board feels a mix of pride and excitement, imagining themselves as heroes. Sailors, officers, captains, and visitors at the dock cheer and salute them. Q. Qron murmurs to himself:

  Q. Qron: “They're all happy, but they don't know the truth... like children.”

  One hour later...

The submarine has traveled 25 kilometers. The torpedoes in the bow room have been serviced. Eleven crew members are asleep, eleven are on duty, and eleven are off duty. White lights are on. No ships in sight. The captain sits on his bunk, reviewing the orders. The first officer is also seated in the officer’s quarters. The captain hands him the mission papers.

  V. Ronghat: “Here, look. How hard do you think this will be?”

  Q. Qron takes the papers, checks the orders, walks to the control room, looks at the map, and compares their location to the assigned patrol zone. He returns and says:

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

  Q. Qron: “Not far, but dangerous. The Jonnog navy will be there. A night ambush would be best. We’ll arrive in about 12 hours.”

  V. Ronghat: “Let’s hope we find a merchant convoy.”

  He turns to F. Grolman:

“How many Wolfs submarines can we contact?”

  F. Grolman: “Only two... W-22 and W-37.”

  V. Ronghat smirks, stands, and heads to the control room.

  V. Ronghat: “All engines, full ahead.”

The engines roar to life. V. Ronghat climbs up and scans the surroundings. A crewmember on the port side yells down:

  Crewman: “We’re diving!”

They descend into the control room. Crew members rush to the torpedo room and lie down.

  Q. Qron: “We’re diving, Captain.”

  V. Ronghat: “Let’s test her integrity. Take her down to 150 meters.”

  Q. Qron: “Flood the ballast tanks. Dive to 150 meters.”

The submarine begins to descend slowly.

  Helmsman: “90 meters, 95, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150.”

  No sounds are heard.

  V. Ronghat: “Good. Take her to 200 meters.”

  Q. Qron: “200 meters depth.”

  Helmsman: “160, 170, 180...”

Weak creaks and groans echo through the hull.

  V. Ronghat: “She has to take more. At least 230 meters.”

  Helmsman: “190, 200...”

The sounds grow louder but stop after a few seconds.

  V. Ronghat: “Check all hatches.”

All systems are reported to be intact.

  O. Avan: “Everything's fine, no leaks, Captain.”

  V. Ronghat: “Alright... that’s enough. Surface the boat.”

  Q. Qron: “Blow the tanks. Fill the ballast tanks with air.”

  The submarine surfaces again.

  14 hours later...

Black smoke appears on the horizon. After 20 minutes, ships are visible.

  V. Ronghat: “Alarm! Dive to periscope depth!”

  Q. Qron: “Battle stations! Dive, dive!”

The crew rushes to the torpedo room and lie down. The submarine dives.

  V. Ronghat: “Switch to red lights and electric motors. Close in as fast as possible.”

  Q. Qron: “Captain, we’re at 8 meters depth. Periscope is ready.”

  V. Ronghat rises to the conning tower and scans with the periscope.

  V. Ronghat: “Still far. We’re on their port side. Turn 40 degrees to port. Full speed ahead. Grolman, go to the sound room and listen for engine noise.”

  F. Grolman enters the sonar room and begins listening.

  F. Grolman: “About 2 kilometers away... very loud... it’s a convoy.”

The submarine closes in. Time: 21:50. It's now dark.

  V. Ronghat: “Surface the boat.”

  Q. Qron: “Blow the tanks. Surfacing. Switch to diesel engines.”

Two minutes later, they’re on the surface. The captain, first officer, and three crewmen stand on the deck silently watching the convoy through binoculars.

  V. Ronghat: “Seven merchant ships in sight. No escorts, it seems. Open the forward torpedo hatches. Load the first four torpedoes.”

Crewman: “No, Captain! There’s a destroyer at 312 degrees!”

  V. Ronghat spots the destroyer.

  V. Ronghat: “Only one destroyer, it seems... Load the first four torpedoes.”

He approaches Q. Qron and points toward the ships:

“One shot at that cargo ship. -108 degrees, 12 km/h, and roughly 1,400 meters away.”

  Q. Qron: “One shot should be enough for each.”

  V. Ronghat calculates speed, angle, and distance.

  V. Ronghat: “First torpedo... fire when ready.”

  O. Avan: “First torpedo ready...”

  V. Ronghat: “Fire!”

  O. Avan: “Fire!”

  The first torpedo launches.

  V. Ronghat: “Second torpedo... fire when ready.”

  O. Avan: “Second torpedo ready...”

  V. Ronghat: “Fire!”

  O. Avan: “Fire!”

  The second torpedo is launched.

  V. Ronghat: “Third torpedo... fire when ready...”

  O.Avan: "Third torpedo is ready..."

  V.Ronghat: "Third torpedo... fire!"

  O.Avan: "Firing!"

  The third torpedo is launched.

V.Ronghat: "Fourth torpedo... fire when ready..."

  O.Avan: "Fourth torpedo is ready..."

  V.Ronghat: "Fourth torpedo... fire!"

  O.Avan: "Firing!"

The fourth torpedo is launched. When the fourth torpedo is fired, there are only 40 seconds left until the first torpedo hits the ship. On the port side, all crew members, the Captain and the First Officer are watching the ships through binoculars with excitement. Suddenly, the destroyer spots them and sounds the alarm, firing its cannon to scare the submarine off and push it away from the convoy. However, once the first torpedo hits a merchant ship in the convoy, the destroyer begins heading straight toward the submarine. The crew on the port side, along with the Captain and First Officer, rush down into the control room.

V.Ronghat: "Dive to 90 meters, quickly!"

The ballast tanks are flooded, and as the submarine dives deeper, the destroyer begins circling above them. Grolman shouts toward the control room:

F.Grolman: "They're right above us... shit! They're dropping depth charges!"

  V.Ronghat: "Stay silent."

  Q.Qron: "Captain, we’re at 90 meters depth."

A few seconds later, depth charges explode very close to the submarine. The submarine shakes violently; the crew loses balance and falls. Lights burst, and a minor leak begins in the electric motor room—water starts seeping in. After a minute, the shaking stops, but more depth charges continue to explode nearby. Avan abandons his battle station and starts running wildly inside the submarine.

V.Ronghat: "Be quiet, Avan! This isn’t a playground! Get back to your post!"

Avan ignores the Captain, continues running, laughing, and crying.

  V.Ronghat: "Shut that idiot up!"

The First Officer and two other crew members beat Avan and drag him to the forward torpedo room, calming him down. Then the First Officer returns to the control room.

Q.Qrom: "... What should we do, Captain?"

  V.Ronghat: "Check all compartments."

Suddenly, Rolvo enters the control room.

Y.Rolvo: "Captain, there's a leak in the electric motor room, but it's not serious."

V.Ronghat: "Start repairs. We’ll remain submerged for a while. Disable the alarm."

They stay submerged until the destroyer’s engine sounds begin to fade.

Four hours later... the engine sounds have nearly disappeared.

  V.Ronghat: "Surface the boat."

Q.Qron: "Blow the tanks, fill the ballast tanks with air."

Once surfaced, the Captain and two crew members step out onto the port side and observe through binoculars. They see that the convoy has moved on and four ships are burning on the water’s surface.

V.Ronghat: "Magnificent... Qrom, turn 96 degrees to port, engines half ahead, let’s get out of here."

The submarine continues cruising on the surface through the night, while the Captain heads to his bunk and falls asleep.
