Interlude: The Opposite Side Of The Coin

  Lance

Lance Goode held his two hook swords up to the man's neck as he trembled. His forest green eyes stared into the man's gray ones as he pleaded. Pleaded for Lance to spare his life. With a turn of his bright orange hair, he turned away from the man who pleaded for his life and instead looked at his two partners. “Did you find it yet, Richard?”

“Not yet.” The dark skinned man named Richard remarked. He threw open a drawer and began rummaging inside. He had brown hair, black eyes, and a large build. He was about six feet tall. So, a few inches taller than Lance. “What about you, Nyssa?”

A woman with tan skin delicately looked through a drawer in the big room they were in. She had short black hair, golden eyes, and a concentrated expression on her face. “Nope. Not a thing. You sure it's here, Lance?” She was a bit shorter than Lance was.

“Of course it is. I wouldn't have made a mistake.” He rolled his eyes. The fancy room was practically ransacked with the amount of drawers the two of them had gone through. Any normal person would've given up. But Lance wasn't exactly normal. He looked at the large windows covered in crimson silk and shook his head.

Big windows. A giant bed. A massive chandelier in the center of the room. The bright red and yellow carpet. So much jewelry. It's all so vain.

“Please.” The man's voice snapped him back to reality. “Just be reasonable here!”

If one were to look at Lance, they probably wouldn't think he was the type to rob a man with a blade to his throat. His skin was light. He wore dirty brown boots, red and black copper pants, and a wrinkled black shirt with a black and red jacket over it. He had a small sheath on the left side of his waist where he kept a small but very thick knife along with two scabbards on his back where he kept the hook swords.

But while he didn't look like a deranged thief, he definitely did look like an outsider. There was a certain roughness to his expression. A certain way he carried himself. The disdain on his expression when he looked at most people here. Everything about Lance Goode screamed that he did not belong. “What's there to be reasonable about? Is there any point to letting you live?”

Richard frowned at that and gave a pointed look at Lance, but neither of them said anything.

“Yes! Why would you kill an innocent man?”

“Innocent?” He sneered. “This is the capital of Akhia. You live in a fancy house. You're not innocent. Just one of the King's dogs. Say it. Tell me you're a dog.”

“I'm a dog.” The man shivered.

“Tell me how much you love sucking the King’s cock.” A twisted smirk came onto his face.

  “But…I don't do that. I have a wife.”

Lance pressed the blades closer to his throat.

“Alright! I love sucking the King's cock!”

“Makes sense. You suck him off and he gives you your wealth.” Lance nodded, clearly pleased with himself. His eyes suddenly lit up. “I have an idea. Say that you'd suck MY cock.”

  “Err…what?”

“It makes perfect sense. I'm a low class scumbag to you. You're a rich guy. If you want me to let you live, show that you'd be willing to lower yourself to my level. And go even lower than that. That's all.”

  The man looked uncertain.

“Of course, if you'd like to cling to your inflated sense of pride, you are more than welcome to.”

  “I'd…I'd…”.

  “You'd…?”

“I'd suck your cock, sir. Pleasure you like no one else ever has, sir.”

Lance smiled at that. “Wow. You really have no pride as a man! It's funny! I almost want to let you live.” He pulled his hands to the side and slit the man's throat. “Almost.”

Lyssa watched the man bleed out with a concerned look on her face. “Why did you kill him?”

“You think he would've shown us any mercy if we were in his shoes?” He flicked the blood from his hook swords and put them away.

“That's not the point. You said you wouldn't kill him. And then you did!”

“So I lied.” He rolled his eyes. “Are you jealous because you thought he was about to take your spot?”

  Nyssa cringed at that.

“Don't worry.” He reached toward her. “No one could ever replace the two of you in my heart.”

She slapped his hand away. “Stop.”

He winced but otherwise didn't make any more advances. “Not in the mood?”

“A man is dead right next to you. No, I'm not in the mood to kiss right now.” She let out a sigh of exasperation.

Richard had been quiet for quite some time. But he suddenly spoke up. “All of this could've been avoided if he hadn't come home early.”

“Well I didn't know that he would.” Lance shrugged.

“Weren't you the one watching him for weeks to try and figure out his schedule?”

“I couldn't have known he would come home early.”

  “A man is still dead.”

“Oh come on! He's not a man. It's not even human. It and all of the other things in the capital are monsters. The enemy! It just so happens to look like us.” Lance spit down on the thing. “It only resembles a human. Or did you forget how it treats people like us? This thing got to live in a big house like this while people like us would have to sleep on the cold ground. There's a reason why none of the knights like visiting the poor villages. They don't care about us!”

“All I'm saying is that maybe HE didn't have to die.”

“Are you saying you don't want me as the leader?”

Richard searched even deeper into the drawer. “I never said that.”

“I'm the only one who stepped up to lead the rebellion after Lincoln ran away like a coward! Me! I'm-”.

Nyssa grabbed his shoulder. “Lance. He never said that.”

He looked at her for a long moment and then nodded. “Right. Sorry. I'm just…sorry.”

“It's okay. Just try to relax. And remember to keep your voices low. We aren't supposed to be here.”

Richard pulled a wrinkled up paper out of the drawer. “Found it!”

  “Rich.”

“Sorry.” He smiled sheepishly at her. His deep voice made it hard not to hear him if he wasn't whispering. “So what's this supposed to be again?”

“A map.” Lance explained. “I overheard this guy talking to the King's treasurer a few weeks ago. They were talking about the routes that would be used for supplies and trade.”

“Ahh. So that's what this was about.”

“Yeah. I mean, supply sabotage is important. I'd like to attack the King directly. But we can't. So the next best thing is to ruin his opportunity to trade properly with others or get supplies for the dogs here. We can use it for our people too. With this map we won't have to spend hours guessing what routes they'll be using.”

Richard nodded. “Seems like a lot of information to trust this guy with.”

“It probably helps if more people know about where to go if they need things.” He shrugged.

I personally wouldn't do anything that stupid. But if these guys want to underestimate us, that's perfectly fine by me. Underestimate us all the way until my blade has reached your throat.

“We have a problem.” Nyssa had gone back to the window.

  “What?” Richard frowned.

  “The man's wife is coming!”

  “Oh. That's fine.”

“Not alone. She has knights with her.”

  “What?” Lance froze. “Why?”

“I don't know! She isn't even supposed to be here!”

“Rich! Did you check the house fully before we came up here?”

Richard rubbed the back of his neck and pocketed the map. “No. I thought the house was empty. It was supposed to be.”

Lance could feel the anger grow within him. But he instead sighed. There was no point getting angry when they needed to leave. “It's fine. She was probably hiding somewhere in the house and alerted the guards when she heard us attacking her husband. We have to go. Now!”

The three of them bolted out of the room. The hallway outside was long and filled with paintings of the man and his wife. There was a similar red carpet over the stone floor. Upon getting to the end of the hall, the three of them dashed down a large brown set of stairs and reached the first floor. Instead of heading towards the front door they all ran to the back of the house where a back door was located.

Richard kicked the door down with ease and stepped outside with Lance and Nyssa behind him.

There were five knights waiting. “Stop!”

Richard dove to the left. Nyssa dove to the right.

Lance dove between the legs of one of the knights. He gathered up a large amount of mana in his arms and rolled in the dirt. Then he got up and slammed his hands onto the ground. Instantly, the ground split open. The very earth itself was torn as the five knights were swallowed. But the crack in the ground didn't stop. It continued to spread until the house tilted over and collapsed into what was now a giant hole. More dirt and earth continued to pile up inside the hole as the ground beneath it sunk deeper. Within a few seconds, it was completely buried.

Lance got to his feet and shook his arms. He didn't see any knights on the other side where the house had been. Or the wife. So they must've all gone inside. “Even if they aren't dead or really injured, it should take them a while before they get out.”

“I appreciate you using your earth magic to save us. But now people are staring…”. Robert glanced at the people around them who had turned to watch the three of them.

“I remember when this was supposed to be a quick and quiet job.” Nyssa sighed.

“Hey! You three! What are you doing over there?” More knights rushed over due to the large amount of destruction that just occurred.

“Come on! Back to base now!” Lance commanded. And the three rebels took off through the streets of Akhia.
