The beast

  Episode 41: Shattered Realities

The beast’s roar echoed across the barren landscape, a sound that seemed to rattle the very core of Kade’s being. As it charged, the ground beneath them trembled with each step it took, sending ripples through the dust and ash. The creature’s massive form was a grotesque mixture of metal and flesh, its jagged, armored exterior glinting in the blood-red light of the sky. Its eyes burned with a primal hunger, and its teeth were sharp, like the jagged spires of the ruined city behind them.

Kade didn’t hesitate. His instincts kicked in, and he pulled Lena toward a narrow alleyway between two broken structures. The creature was too large to follow them through, but the risk was still there. It could tear through the ruins with ease. Their only chance was to outrun it.

“Move!” Kade shouted, his voice cutting through the thick, suffocating air.

Lena didn’t need any more encouragement. Her legs pumped with the strength of adrenaline, but even as they ran, Kade could feel the pulse of something dark, something ancient, in the air. The world around them felt unstable, like it was coming apart at the seams. The ground cracked and groaned, and strange, flickering lights danced in the periphery of his vision.

But it wasn’t just the beast they had to worry about.

As they ran, the very fabric of reality seemed to bend, as if the rules of time and space didn’t apply here. In every corner of their vision, strange shadows twisted and warped, creating nightmarish shapes that flickered in and out of existence. Kade felt his grip on reality slipping, his mind struggling to stay focused.

Behind them, the ground began to split open, the massive creature closing in with terrifying speed. It let out another bone-shaking roar, and Kade could feel its presence drawing closer, suffocating the air with its malevolent energy.

Kade turned to Lena, grabbing her arm and yanking her to a stop. “We’re not going to outrun this thing,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “We need to figure out how to fight it. We need to use the environment against it.”

Lena’s eyes were wide with fear, but there was a fire in them, too. She looked around, searching for anything they could use, anything that might give them an edge.

In the distance, the ruined city loomed, its shattered buildings standing like jagged teeth against the sky. Kade’s mind raced. There had to be something there. Something they could use.

“We’re not going to survive out here unless we take the fight to it,” Kade said, his voice steady despite the panic that threatened to rise in his chest. “If we don’t act now, it’ll catch us.”

Lena nodded, her resolve hardening. She reached into her bag, pulling out another strange device—this one smaller, but no less powerful. It hummed with a low, vibrating energy that Kade could feel in his bones.

“This is a gravity pulse disruptor,” Lena explained, her hands steady even as the ground shook beneath them. “It can create a temporary field that shifts the gravitational pull in a localized area. It’s experimental, but it should disorient the creature.”

Kade didn’t have time to question how Lena knew about these devices. They were all they had. “Let’s use it, then.”

Lena activated the device, and a wave of energy rippled through the air. The ground beneath them buckled as the gravity shifted, throwing them off balance for a moment. Kade’s heart pounded in his chest as he watched the beast stumble, its heavy form struggling against the shift in gravitational pull. It roared in frustration, its movements erratic as it tried to regain control.

But Kade didn’t wait. He reached for his weapon, the plasma rifle heavy in his hands. He fired a shot, and the beam of light streaked toward the creature’s exposed side. The creature howled in pain, but the shot only caused it to stagger—it wasn’t enough to bring it down.

“We need something bigger!” Kade shouted.

Lena didn’t hesitate. She pointed toward a nearby structure—one of the ruined towers that still stood tall, its jagged metal beams jutting into the sky like a broken ribcage.

“We can bring that down on it,” Lena said, her voice filled with determination. “If we hit the right spot, we can collapse it right on top of it.”

Kade didn’t argue. He knew they didn’t have time to waste. He and Lena sprinted toward the structure, the gravity pulse device still humming in the background, its energy rippling through the air. They reached the base of the tower, and Kade immediately began scanning the structure for weak points.

“Here,” Kade said, pointing to a series of cracks running up the side of the tower. “If we can get a shot in there, it’ll cause the whole thing to collapse.”

Lena didn’t hesitate. She adjusted the gravity pulse disruptor in her hands, focusing the energy to create a targeted field. The air hummed with power as the device powered up, sending a burst of energy that hit the weak point in the tower. For a moment, nothing happened. Then—

  Crash!

The tower shuddered and groaned, and then the whole structure began to crumble. Massive chunks of metal and debris rained down, and with a final, thunderous crash, the entire tower collapsed onto the creature beneath it. The ground shook as the ruins of the tower slammed into the creature, crushing it beneath the weight of the debris.

Kade didn’t wait for confirmation. He grabbed Lena’s arm and pulled her away from the collapsing wreckage, the debris continuing to fall in a massive rain of twisted metal and stone.

The silence that followed the collapse was deafening. Kade and Lena stood there for a moment, catching their breath, the weight of what they had just done settling on them.

But they didn’t have time to relax.

From the shadows of the destroyed city, something else stirred.

  A new threat. More creatures.

  And they were coming.

  End of Episode 41.

Kade and Lena’s escape has only led them deeper into the unknown, with more dangers lurking around every corner. With the creature defeated, but new horrors on the horizon, their battle for survival continues—no matter the cost. The fracture of reality itself seems to be pulling them further into the abyss.

What will they face next? And can they survive long enough to uncover the truth behind this fractured world?
